what and where?
« on: March 27, 2009, 03:50:48 PM »
Here's one of a pair from our vacation the other week. I just happened to look over in a park and see these sticking out in the morning sun. Funny thing is that I had been here several times in the past and never noticed them!

Here's another pair found about a quarter mile from the other two.

First pair are both USN 20-pounder Parrott rifles, dated 1863, in New Orleans.  Reg. nos. 259 and 263.  It would be nice if someone would paint them, they are corroding a good deal.

I started not to post the pics with the registry numbers. :)

I don't know how many times I've sat in this park and never noticed them before. I thought they were just decorations at first due to the rusty finish until I got up close and could see all the markings and details. The bores aren't plugged either and they are stuffed full of trash. I actually unplugged them from the garbage people shoved down them so I could take the pics.

Good work.  Next time you go, take a couple of gallons of Rustoleum primer and paint 'em.  No one will care but us.  Make sure and wear some coveralls with "Earl" or something embroidered on the pocket, and put some yellow caution tape around the area you are working in so it will look like an official city job, and like I said, no one will care.  Send me photos of the completed, fully-primed cannon and I will reimburse you for the paint and brushes.

If you really want to be proper and thorough, you could ask the city if you could do it, but like any government it will be full of cautious people who get paid whether they do anything or not, and they certainly won't want to get in trouble, so likely the answer will be no, or come back in a month after I find someone else to ask.

On Parrott #2, what is the nipple-like fixture on the rear of the breech, that resembles a grease zerk? #1 looks like it has a hole for the same fixture.

Tap, that was where the rear sight was placed, it was then aligned with the front sight which was placed on top of the right rimbase, to get the sight line when laying the gun.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

You know that's some good design when it's  just sitting on a block of cement and still looks great.  Nice lines, good Parrott.
