I had let my Purchase Permit lapse a while back and have been dragging my feet getting to the Cop Shop for a new application.  Well, I stopped in on Monday after work, filled it out right there and handed it back to the receptionist.  Even on a renewal, it usually takes about 2 wks before you get your permit in the mail.  Mine came yesterday.  YEE HA !  Now I can get serious and do some real shopping to see what I can come up with for a handgun.

How do Purchase Permits work in Minnesota?  How long is a permit good for?  Do you need one for each handgun you wish to purchase?  What do they cost?  If you have a CCW do you still need a Purchase Permit?

Here in NC they only cost $5 and are good for 5 years but you need one for each gun you wish to purchase.

In Minnesota, Purchase Permits are free.  You need only to fill out the application at your local law enforcment authority.  The are good for one year and you can purchase as many handguns as you want. 
Currently, you do not need a Purchase Permit if you hold a CCW.  There was a bill to be sent to committee to change that, but it has had no action taken on it and hopefully it will die.  Lots of opposition to it.  To get a CCW you must pass a course with class and range time and costs about $100 and then another $100 for the permit and it lasts for 5 years.

Me: I can't believe I got my permit in only 3 days.
Wife: I thought you already had one.
Me: It expired and I had to re-apply.
Wife:  Why? I thought you have a gun.  Don't you already have a handgun?
Me:  Yes, but its ONLY a 22.

HERE IT COMES 

Wife: Then why do you need another one?
Me: I never had one before, I needed the 22 to learn how to shoot a handgun.

She went on about her business of picking up the house and so did I.  Both of us deciding this was not the morning to take it further. 
Well, now I will have to go into the whole deal about terminal ballistics and CCW and how you can't reload 22's and well, just any other things I can come up with to sell her on lookin' the other way while I buy another handgun.

Mention handbags and shoes the next time she starts asking "How many handguns do you need.?"  That usually ends that conversation at my house. 

I have 3 .22 handguns alone.   I won't go into long guns or other calibers.

You are excited and jubilent that you have been allowed to pay to excercise a GOD given and Constitutionally protected RIGHT as if it were a priviledge. 

Yes I know it's a fact of life for you there and required for you to do what the Constitution says "shall not be infringed" but which modern courts have begun to turn into a priviledge granted by the government. Still to me it's sad and sadder still than you have become so accustomed to the restriction to be happy over it.

GB, Never said I liked it nor agree with paying for 'permits' allowing me to exercise my God given rights.  More like commiserating with Cookieman over having to do so.

Excited? Jubilent?  About the fact that I have to get a permit....NOT HARDLY !   As you stated, its my right and that's that. 

But, unfortunately, as the saying gos "It is what it is" and "what it is" is that the law requires it.  I am just happy that the process was so speedy.  The last permit I applied for took a bit over 2 weeks to receive.  This one only took 3 days.

As far as Mamma is concerned, I don't think that will be a hard sell.  There have been a couple local shoot outs at malls around here and so my case is re-inforced and also, she actually understood the part about terminal balistics.  I think they understand a lot more than they let us know, they just like to watch us squirm and try to explain.

None really. No permits, no waiting periods and all it takes to get a concealed carry permit is a visit to the county Sheriff's office. Fee varies by county as I understand it but the money is an off budget addition to what he can spend so turning ya down costs him money so it don't happen without a mighty good reason.

Here in my county the fee is $10 and renewal for me and the wife both at same time takes at most five minutes. I've had one since the day after I turned 21 and that's a LOOOONG time ago.

If ya want to buy a handgun or a dozen of them for that matter ya go into the store pay the money wait for them to call in the instant check the feds require then head home with whatever ya want and can afford.

From everything I understand about it Cheese, you sure can. You have to take a course by a certified instructor first, though. After taking the course you are also eligible to carry in many other states too.
