I wanted an AR 15 but.....
« on: March 28, 2009, 05:04:13 AM »
ARs are really restricted in Kaliforniastan.  Ruger mini 14s are hard to come by, I'm beginning to think about a Marlin Camp Carbine in 9mm.  Has anyone shot one?  Are they reliable?  Are there other lite carbines I should look at.  I'm looking for a SHTF gun that won't get me into trouble here in Kaliforniastan.

You might want to consider a lever action as there are fewer restrictions, they are fairly fast shooting and hold far more round than bolt guns. Better still consider moving to a more gun friendly state.

I wish I could move!  I have three lever guns Marlin, Winchester, and Savage.  I was thinking of something that was faster to reload in a military caliber.  The Savage is 308 and it's acurate but is a five shot and is slower to reload than the other two a problem that is made worse because of the scope I have on it.  The Marlin being 9mm isn't over powered for close range and with back up clips it'll be fast to reload if fools start climbing the fence.  I have a chance to buy a Rem 7400 SS in 06 for $300 but it's a bit heavy, 06 isn't a military round any more and it's a lot of power for short range.

The Marlin Camp 9 has problems.  Research them on the internet.   The rifle has a plastic buffer piece, that the bolt slams against when it goes rearward.  This is apparently a source of lots of problems.  People have reported that this piece breaks in as little as 400 rounds, which isn't very many rounds considering you are shooting the 9mm.

If this piece breaks, where are you going to get a replacement?  Marlin stopped making this rifle several years ago, and I doubt that they are stocking this part.  I read that some company use to make a better quality, polymer, replacement part, for a pretty high price, but that this company isn't making them anymore.

Also, this rifle was made in .45 caliber, and apparently, this stouter round was routinely causing the stock to split, right where the back of the receiver meets the stock, at the top of the grip.

So, I would do alot of research on the complaints and problems posted on the Net before buying a Marlin Camp 9.   Especially since there are apparently alot of other good reliable 9mm carbines out there.

Regards,  Mannyrock

The Beretta Storm shares magazines with the 92 pistols I believe which might be a handy thing. There is some kind of compatibility issue between some models I believe, best to check well before you purchase.

Here's a way to have an ar 15 w/ detachable magazine. Also made for ak just look at CA legal on the left in the menu. Saiga should also be legal.

Here's another design.

http://www.snipercountrypx.com/showproduct.aspx?productid=3240
Keltec 223.

SKS and M1A

Ruger made an old and new model (discontinued) 44 mag which looks similar to a 10-22, They are a bit pricey but of good quality. Also 9mm and 40 along the same concept of the marlin. The storm may be illegal there unless they have a CA model, no pistol grips.

The 308 battle rifles are legal with the removal of pistol grip, ie fal hk91.

If I had to live there I would go with a slicked up action model 94 win trapper in 44 mag with ghost ring. It's also hard to beat the fire power of a 12 ga with buck shot and extended magazine tube w/ ghost ring as well.

Thank you I can build a AR in this state that's legal!  Now to figure the cost and features.
