I don't really have a favorite.  I've always just relied on whatever was my current deer rifle.  Now that I've settled on the 6.5X55 Swede as my general North American big game rifle, it has become my favorite pig gun too.  I must say, it does kill with authority.  140 grain Barnes XLCs flat thump those pigs.  I'd always read about the ability of high SD 6.5mm bullets to kill efficiently, but now I'm a believer.  I'm sure there are better rifles for pigs, especially larger ones, but I'm confident enough in my Swede to put it up against pretty much any hog I'll encounter.

Plus, it's just sweet to shoot!

guess it would be my Marlin 1894 in .44mag, followed by the Marlin .444P, and then if the weather is really we, Rem 700 composite 30-06.   Like the way the Marlins carry and the big holes they make in the hogs.

I like the .35 Remington, killed my first hog with a Marlin, and currently have a Remington 760, which allows the use of pointed bullets and heavier loads.

Marlin 1895 in 45-70 or .54 caliber Hawken muzzleloader.  Both work quite well.

I shoot both types but the twist in that particular rifle (Uberti Santa Fe HAwken) does not give outstanding accuracy with balls so I took to shooting a conical that gives better penetration and lots better accuracy with 90gr of FFg.  I just built a "Track of the Wolf" Southern Mountain rifle in .45 that shoots round balls like a dream but I have not killed anything yet.  I hope to shoot a hog this year.

My Marlin 1895G 45-70 is my favorite pig medicine - bowls 'em over every time. That's followed closely by my Win 70 F/W in .308, it's not quite as dramatic when it hits but it's just as deadly.

I have killed them with 19 different rounds and would have to say my favorites are 45/70 with 405 cast, 30-06 with 180gr, 30/30 170, and 375 win with 260gr cast. The 45/70 has become my favorite as it will sure put them down and dont have to load the heavy rounds to do it either. My favorite load gets around 1600 with the 405.

Naw, Chris just kidding, the one and only hog I have killed was with a 7X57. Can't remember the exact load, but it was a 139gr Sierra over a charge of IMR 4895. He dropped in his tracks. I was deer hunting at the time. Here, pigs are not a game animal, so they may be taken durring open season for any game animal with whatever weapon is legal for that species. What it amounts to, is durring deer or bear season when a centerfire weapon is legal in the woods, they may be taken with that. You can kill them durring small game season as well with what ever is legal then. Like a 22 rimfire or a shotgun with no larger than #4 steel shot. A 22 would not be my first choice, but durring small game season it is my only choice. I don't hunt them myself, but lots of guys kill them every year with rimfires.

wanting a marlin 45-70 but think a 35rem would work in tx woods, maybe not as dramatic as 444 or 45-70 but i have alot more respect for 35 than 30-30. also have never seen a marlin 35 that wouldnt pretty much keep up with bolt action in accuracy dept

Definitely on of my .41Magnums. I've taken more than a dozen pigs with the .41Magnum and had excellent performance each time. I like the hard cast 250grWFNCG at around 1300fps. Largest one was 300lbs +/- dressed.  We like the 150 to 200lbs best as they don't need such a large pit.

Of all the guns I own, I would take one of the following depending on the terrain, cover and type of hunting (still, stand, etc).
1] Scoped Winchester Model 70 in .375H&H.
2] Scoped Ruger Deerfield.
3] Scoped .30-06 Ruger Model 77.
4] Marlin 1895 GG with aperture sights.

I've found the little Winchester 94 trapper carbine in 44mag, topped with Leupold VariXII 1-4, shooting the 300grain Federal Castcore factory load to be plenty sufficient.
The intruder turns around slowly, sees both barrels, and hears a low-deep voice say "Son, the left one's iron and the right one's steel, if the left one don't get you, the right one will"

300W scoped Sako bolt for still hunting
444Marlin Win94 with Docter miniature red dot for drive hunting (close range, running critter).

Having witnessed many loss or crippled with 7X64, 270Win or 280Win, I came to these choices.
Big real wild boar are extemely tough and even these calibers fail often to pass through, quartering shot or shoulder shot at the backbone level.

For big wild boar and big Black Bear my new Win. M70 in .450 Marlin is getting the nod.  I used to use nothing less than a .30-06 because when those wild boar get to the 250+ lb. mark they start to get real tough to bring down and having one chew on my leg isn't a pleasant thought.  I have seen two guys that got hog chewed, wasn't pretty.  Lawdog

I have had great luck with my .270 Winchester. I've used 150 Nosler Partition Bullets, both the original and the Partition Gold.

Is your M70 a custom rifle? I've been considering this setup and would like to know about your experience with it.

rimshot,

My Win. M70 .450 Marlin is a barreled action I bought from Clark's Custom Guns.  I had them make sure that the magazine and throat was long enough for round nose and pointed bullets up to 500 gr.(Barnes X for example) as this is what I intended to use in it.  The cost was $750.00.  I did my own stock work and had my gunsmith add the barrel band sling stud and express sights.  I could have gotten it with a laminated stock for an added $350.00 but I don't care for those type of stocks.  Clark's address is as follows;

Clark Custom Guns, Inc.
336 Shootout Lane
Princeton, Louisiana 71067
http://www.clarkcustomguns.com/index.htm

A great outfit that gave me top of the line service.  I'll do business with them again.  If you have any more questions just ask.  Lawdog

I shot a little 120 pounder two years ago out in SW Texas with a Stevens 44 1/2 chambered in 32 H&R pushing a 120gr cast bullet at 1700fps. One shot one dead pig! I'm not sure this is my favorite/ ultimate hog gun though.
