I Can't Believe It

I suspected that the "Gun Run" would slow down after several months in office but apparently the Big "O" still has folks scared. I saw an plain Armalite AR-10 for $1895 today at the gun show. Bushmaster AR-15's weren't any better. Over $1000. It has gotten rediculous. Is it any better outside of Georgia?

You must have went to the show in Savannah. I plan on going around dinner time Sunday just to see whats going on. From all the talk I hear these high prices are here to stay for awhile longer. Supply and demand sure is hard sometimes.
Just curious, how were the ammo prices? Also how was the attendance?

It was the RK show in Valdosta. Ammo is still high but there were a few decent deals. One guy had a pallet of Aguilla and Magtech. 1000 rounds of 9mm was $219 and 45 ACP was $269. Those are Wal-Mart prices. 5.56 was flying out the door, did not check on it but I suspect is was high. Lithuanian 308, $135 for 200 rounds.

Went to a show in Illinois this weekend.  Plenty of Rock River AR's and prices haven't changed much in the past 5-6 months.  Comlplete lowers were $400 and uppers started at around $475 for carbines if I remember right.  Some vendors were playing the "get it while you can, cause once its gone I can't get anymore" game.  And had stock marked up more than it should be.  Not too many people buying from them that I saw.

I started to go to the Valdosta show yesterday, but the weather was bad and I didn't have enough cash to take to make the trip worthwhile.

Here in Waycross, there is at least one dealer with guns on the shelf and he isn't gouging, but he is having to cover more cost than usual. Prices are up all along the food chain. He's got a new Bushmaster carbine for less than $1000 and three DPMS from $800-900, all with a little wiggle room on the OTD price.

Lately he's been able to keep a few thousand rounds of .223 and .308 (PMC,Wolf, Remington) in stock. The biggest thing he's having trouble getting is magnum revolver ammo, .357 and .44.

Pistol ammo he's got (except for .380, no one here seems to be able to get ANY .380).

But all in all the situation is better than it was a month ago.

A friend of mine bought all the 380 he could get yesterday. A grand total of 3 1/2 boxes out of all the vendors there. Does the dealer in Waycross have any bulk 308? Where are they located?

Don't know about bulk, but he had some .308 on the shelf a few days ago. He's in Waresboro, just west of Waycross.

He's not the type to turn over really large bulk quantities, but it never hurts to call and ask.

I looked at every table that had ammo and no one had any 9m/m or 44 mag. After a couple hours of looking around and talking to people I finally did find 50 rounds of 44 mags ( I wanted about 250 rounds). A couple of dealers had pallets of 223 Wolf ammo but they were priced way to high. There was plenty of guns to look over. Alot of guns were sold there today but the buyers sure paid a stiff price for them.

I have noticed a lot of Berdan primed stuff on the market lately. It makes me wonder if any of those folks know what they are getting. I have heard that if you don't shoot Wolf, don't start and if you do then do not change. Something about changing from brass to steel casings. Have yall heard that?

I know guys that shoot both brass and steel cased ammo without any problems. I have talked to a couple of friends that say the steel ammo leaves more residue behind and needs cleaning much sooner.

Bornsouthern, the laquer coating from the Wolf ammo will melt off and gum up the chamber.  More laquer coated ammo won't typically stick, but brass cases will.  Just clean the chamber well and you'll be fine.  If you're shooting an AK, feed it whatever you want, it doesn't know the difference, but my AR certainly does.

I have an AR-10 and it is tight. I talked to some other guys with the same problem. If my reloads are not within 2/1000's of factory specs they won't chamber all the way. Now that you bring up the laquer issue, I remember hearing that from someone else also.

Yeah, I had problems with my reloads chambering in my AR as well.  I called RCBS and they told me their standard full length sizing die would work, I simply had to turn it down a 1/8 - 1/4 turn in the press so the ram contacts it earlier and the handle "breaks over."  Since then I've had no problems with my reloads.

I have never once had a problem with the Laquer melting off of a case and
causing a problem.5.56x45...7.62x39...7.62x51....7.62x54....8mm mauser!
no problem with any of these and  I could not count how many I have fired!
and the way things are now, I take what I can find corrosive, laquered doesn't matter.

S.S., I've only had a problem with the .223.  It doesn't really seem to "melt off" (bad choice of words) like you would think in big clumps, it just leaves enough sticky residue to make whatever comes after it stick.

I've been keeping my eye on gunbroker for months now because it's a good snapshot of what people are paying nationwide.  It seems to me that more of the normal AR-15's are becoming available and the prices are starting to settle down.  If you want the odd ball stuff like an AR in 308 the prices are still through the roof.  Anything you want to buy now you're going to pay abuot $200 and up more for it than you would have about a year ago. 

For instance the local gander mountain had the bushmaster m4's for sale for $1050 pre-election and now they're $1200.  Online they went crazy, but are getting back to the 1200 range.  The price on guns is slowly coming back down.  The pricing on ammo is what drives me crazy.  I remember back when you could buy PMC 223 ammo at a reasonable price.  Now even that is selling around $.50 per round.  I keep my eye out for 22LR bulk packs because anymore that's all a guy can afford to shoot and that's been off the shelves for a while now.

I agree with you....  "I can't believe it".

Reminds me of what machine guns did after May 19, 1986. Dealers could trade dollars, trade guns, and name any price they wanted with the public following along.             -"Of course it's a thousand dollar dog. I traded two five-hundred dollar cats for him"!

The laquer has been a issue for some of the heavy shooters, we had to pull the barrel off a M16 upper because of the back of the casing actually ripped loose.  I have seen some considerable laquer coating on the chambers of beltfed guns, I had a 308 barrel that the casing stuck so heavily that it couldn't be driven out with a cleaning rod,but we are talking 600 rds in under 5 mins and trashing a barrel on a 1919a4 isn't a big deal. It seems that the 7.62x54R has more "coating"than some of the smaller rounds, that ammo is a PIA if you run it in a beltgun. 8MM? I havent seen any of it with laquer finish? but Im still running the turk ammo.....

One of the SOTs that i spoke with said that he had noted some changes in headspacing on his ANM2 after ALOT of ammo use(54R), it has NOTcaused a failure but one never knows.....

  It is funny how the Gun-Run is different, depending on where you live.  I live in a fairly rural part of the Shenandoah Valley, and often stop by a small gunshop in a little town.  The owner told me that during the past 4 months, every .38 revolver he had (or got), new or used, was snapped up immediately, as well as all .38 ammo.   

   As for magnum revolver ammo, such as .357 and .44 mag, he doesn't really have much problem keeping it on the shelves.    You also have to remember that almost everyone in this county is poor, so not many could afford to run in and buy lots of boxes of mag ammo at $26.00 a box and up.

   He said that his big supply problem is that he can't get any .32 auto or .380 auto, and that he has trouble getting the .22 ammo in bricks.  The .22 ammo goes out the door almost immediately.  He now says that he will not sell more than one brick of .22 to any customer.  (He thinks that it is not fair that so many people are hording, and his other customers can't find any at all.)

   He does not stock military ammo.  This is groundhog country, so all of the .223 he sells is soft-point varmint ammo.  He had plenty.

   Also, no problem getting regular hunting ammo, in any of the deer calibers, including .308 Winchester.

   Also guys, at some point, you would probably be better off buying TWO stainless Mini-14 ranch rifles in .223, than one AR-15.  Maybe the AR-15 is better, but how much better??  Twice as good?  Not likely.  If you are unable to resolve any self-defense problem you have with a stainless Mini-14, then having an AR is not going to help you.
