Is handgun carry with a valid permit allowed in the Cohutta wilderness area?

Now you got me wondering...  ???  Also the land use differences.  I'm familiar with the Cohutta WMA, I think I am anyway, but where is the Cohutta Wilderness Area?  Maybe I got it backwards... I'm getting on in years ya know...  :-[

If I remember I'll check tomorrow about carrying in State WMA's.  You must have heard about the flap going on about carrying in Federal land.  ::)

The Cohutta is indeed a wilderness are with part of it as a WMA. being wilderness, it's foot travel only in the WMA portion. if you have a ccw you may carry a handgun either concealed or open while there in any hunting season.

The Cohutta Wilderness lies on the Tennessee state line and borders the Big Frog Wilderness area.  The combination of Big Frog and Cohutta make it the largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi river.

Presently, in Tennessee, WMA's are the sacred cow and handguns are not permitted except in a valid hunting season with a proper hunting license.  This rule prevents carry in more than 630,000 acres of the Cherokee National Forest as all of it is designated as a WMA.  So, no handgun carry from the Georgia state line to the Great Smokey Mountains.

I live close to the state line and spend a fair amount of time in the area.

I was wondering if Georgia allows handgun permit holders to carry on WMA's?

With a ccw, you may carry at any time on a WMA.

Hello from McBean,

As has been stated, with a concealed weapon permit you may carry a weapon on any WMA. The laws have also been changed in the last year so that a person with a CWP can carry a pistol during the state archery season. In years past, a person was in violation of hunting laws when in possission of any firearm while bow hunting. This new law is good for all of of us who "go heels everywhere we go". Have a great day.

Yea, well, I'm just wanting to do some backpacking......so I'm good for open carry or concealed with a Tennessee handgun carry permit?

In Tennessee the laws are published on the department of safety's web site.  Where are the Georgia laws listed?

I went to the library recently to check the "annotated Ga. code" for the actual text of the change in handgun laws.  The librarian told me they run about 2yrs. behind in getting updates.  I'll check back in a couple of years I guess..................

Thanks!  Maybe I should contact the local sheriff's office?
