Steel Shot in a Lead Choke?
« on: March 29, 2009, 07:10:16 AM »
What are the effects of shooting steel shot in a lead only choke?

Grabbed the wrong shot.

Be more specific... If you're shooting steel through an ultra tight choke it might "blow" the pattern although my experience has been that the idea of blown steel patterns is mostly talk.

Generally steel shoots moderately tighter.

Steel shot doesn't compress as much as lead as it travels thru the choke. Also the shot cups are made thicker so that the steel shot doesn't score the inside of the barrel.Thats why it is recomended that you not shoot steel thru a full choke as it may bulge the barrel. With steel, the modified choke acts as a full, the improved cilinder acts as a modified, and so on.

I shot one round of #2 Steel 2 3/4" through my turkey choke on my 835.

Doesn't seem to have affected it at this time, I just hate it that I done it.

Thanks

If you've worried about it for even 1 minute it's 1 minute too long.  If you're talking about some old hand made damascus barrel Purdey I might worry.  You're talking about a roman candle with a stock... who cares?

Hi Dukkillr,

No-one mentioned it is so cheap to get the proper choke for steal shot. ??? You can even buy chokes for hevi-shot to extend the distance of harder shot. I wouldn't shoot any more through the gun until I had the correct choke. Stay safe, stay alive.

Have a good time shooting and better time hunting. :)
