Model 97 32 H&R Magnum
« on: March 29, 2009, 07:52:54 AM »
I am wanting to get a 32 H&R Magnum for squirrel and rabbit hunting here in Virginia.  I can't make up my mind concerning the barrel length and sight options.  I have a Model 83 in 41 Magnum and I like the express sights, but I might be better served by another sight.  Which sight to you like better and which would be best for small game?  Also, between the 5.5" and 7.5" barrel, which would you choose and why?

7 1/2" barrel-longer sight radius-potentially more accurate.  Patridge front and adjustable square notch rear-definately most accurate.  Shoot cast bullets if you plan to eat the small game. JMHO

I should mention that I have a pr. of Ruger single sixes in .32 H&R with 6 1/2" barrels and sights as above. Excellent small game guns.  Use 115 gr. cast.

Hank08,

Have you tried the jacketed bullets offered by Sierra or Hornady?  Do they open up too much on edible small game?

My .32 H&R Mdl. 97 has a 7 1/2" barrel. I use an ISGW  target rear sight and one of my own undercut patridge front sights. I'm quite satisfied with that set-up.
There are certainly differences of opinion on the topic, but for my own use, I find express sights to be too crude for small game accuracy.
In my own state of N.C., only .22 rimfires (and shotguns) are legal for squirrels and rabbits. However, I have used the FA .32 H&R on groundhogs, with the 85 gr. Hornady XTP driven by H 4227 to 1200 fps. That load is not what I would use on rabbits and squirrels due to the expansion and meat damage. Cast bullets would be a better option.

I've used the 60 and 85 hornady on rabbits.  Tears them up so I use 115 at 1100 fps using 2400 or #9, doesn't kill as quickly as the jacketed but doesn't tear them up or blood shot
the meat.  I feel the same as Ken about the express sights.
