need scope advice
« on: September 07, 2003, 05:31:22 AM »
Recently i have begun teh "planning stages" (ie mentally working up the config, writing it out on paper, see ing approximately what each item will cost etc)) for building a rifle on a Savage 10FP or 12FV (same basic gun, different finish and slight stock difference) in .308, for use in a locally held 600yard Prone match.  this rifle will also be, at least for a little while, used as my general purpose 1-300 yard "just for fun" target gun.  so far i have pretty much mapped out what all i need to get for the "foundation" of this project (new stock, large bolt handle, SharpShooter supply recoil lug  etc).  but i have not been able to settle on a scope yet.

To meet what i see as my baseline needs and wants for this project, the optics in question MUST have the following features...

Adjustable Objective

Target style turrets (preferably 1/8MOA clicks but 1/4 livable)

A max magnification of AT least 10x or 12x

Clear, bright etc etc (you all know what i mean here)

not sure about reticle type, i've never used a Mil-dot before, buit many have suggested it,  fine Duplex would probably do just as well for me.

and now here's teh kicker, my budget tops out at around $350-400 absolute MAX for time being, i would actually prefer this to be a bit less than this.
Myt current shooting skill etc just isn't at a level where a top end scope would nessesarily make a noticable difference in my scores at the 600 yard match.  i simply want something that is a Decent scope to be able to get out and get shooting with.

some of the ones i have looked at and considered but want to know more about are
the BSA Platinum and Contender lines (have met a few silhouette shooters locally who LOVE their BSAs but i don't know enough about them to be sure.

the Bushnell Elite 4200, again don't know enough about the line, they do NOT feature full sized target turrets, instead the target models have "mini-" or "Semi-" target turrets and unless i find out that the adjustment
ranges are the same etc, that makes me a bit cautious.

any other suggestion would be and very much are welcome.   thank you for your time and your advice.

BSA makes a decent scope. I have friends thar have them & they work well. The World Class + from Tasco is another real good scope for the price. I've put several of those on rifles. See if they have what you want,as far as options.
I know they are going out,but they make a good product.

go fo the B&L 4200 6-24  or 8-32, I have 3 of them and I am very pleased with optics, TRACKING system, they are 1/8 adjustments and about 22 0z heavy for the 4200's  but it is the best scope fro this money, in my opionion (MY!) it is better than Leopolds
good luck

Just a little of advice that you can do with what you want. I had the Tasco and then the Bsa Platinum. Well lets see the tasco would not hold zero and it took a few boxes of ammo to get it sighted in. The bsa was a nice looking scope and it you are looking for something to hunt with it will probably work fine but I am trying to hit a 1/2" bull at 100 and it would not do it. It will not hold zero and adjusting was a nightmare. They sent me 3 different scopes and I am know waiting for a check from them. I know what you are saying I have NCstars on my hunting rifles and they work fine for the use. I know have a Sightron 6-24 on my savage 12 bvss and it works GREAT...Take my advice and save the money it will be well spent....

I have a 6X24X40 World Class Tasco on my Husky 30-06 . It works fine, & it has ajustable AO & a Duplex style cross-hair.

I personally have spent way too much money on less expensive scopes. If I had made an original investment of decent optics when I had first decided to become a serious shooter I would be financially far better off now.
Most serious shooters I've seen are using Leupold, B & L 4200s and Weavers. I personally opted for B & L. They seem to be the best bang for the dollar. I know both Leupold and B & L reticles can be changed within US and Canada at a  reasonable cost.

I would consider a Sightron. I currently own a sightron in a 3-12x42. So far been very pleased...Bright clear and rugged. Actually just went hunting with friends last night and both commented how bright and clear it was at dusk compaired to their scopes. I would consider buying another.
Anyway Sightron has a 6-24x42 mil dot for around $350 which is right in your budget range. Might be worth a look.
Good Luck,
Thomas

$$$ and scopes
« Reply #9 on: November 22, 2003, 02:46:42 PM »
I have been through many a scope in my day, even though I've only been shooting for 10 years, and I have finally figured out that quality does not cost, but rather pays. I just bought my first Leupold for my varmint rig, and have been nothing less than awed, after my recent experience with, shall we say, inferior-scopes. I shot a custom Mauser in 25-06 last year with a Tasco on it and I must say it shames me to say I even looked through it.  I do not like the BSA's either; my friends and I rip on them on a regular basis.  I would say just to hold out and get some quality optics, especially for a match rifle.

Also one last comment for these guys on here who shoot B&L's-Where do you find them? My Lord I've looked all over hell and half of georgia and have yet to find one unless it was on someones gun who loved it dearly and would never part with it. Thanks to all.

Yes I have some input for you. If you want a nice scope that works well go with the Sightron. The 6-24 works real well. It holds Zero as good as any Leupold ever made. I sold mine for I am looking for something with more power for benchrest shooting.....You can get them for around $320 to $350 depending where you shop.....Big T

i bought my first sightron 6-24 mil dot last summer, for a cooper in 22-250AI. and it is the best scope i own! i paid under 400 bucks. it wont be the last sightron i buy!
the more demanding your sport is, the easier is it to weed out the scopes that wont cut it.   i have heard nothing but good about the b&l and the weaver target models. but i dont have any first hand expierience with either. good luck!

Jose, I was pleased to see that your opinion offered us something other than a Leupold or another high-priced scope brand.
I would like to see other opinions of scopes in the $100 to $200 range for target shooting. Looking for brands and models to put on my short list for target shooting.
The Tasco World Class Plus is made in Japan? The World Class is made in China? How do the World Class scopes compare to the Varmit/Target line of scopes offered by Tasco?
The rifles I will be using are 7x08 and 243 calibers.
Thanks,
Gary

I have a World Class 6X24X40 on a 30-06. It has held up well for several years. This is on my Husky made in 1950 & one of my favorite rifles to take out & just shoot. My brothers have WC+ on their rifles & are very happy. One is an 06' & the other is a 300mag.

There are a couple guys with Springfield Scopes on M-1As. They seem to like them very much. Alas, I've not used one myself. Sorry.

det,
I use BSA Platinums on a few rifles, and have had no problems with mine.
The 6X24 has a little brighter image than the 8X32.  The resolution is very good on both the 6X24 and the 8X32, although the 6X24 does seem to have a little edge on the 8X32 for sharpness.  I am, generally, not a big BSA fan but I do like the Platinum series.  Most mailorder retailers sell them for slightly over $100.  Not a bad scope for the money.
Best,
TnNuc
