Ruger 10/22 scope mounting, I need help ;-)
« on: September 07, 2003, 08:31:44 AM »
I own two Ruger 10/22s: a K10/22T and a 10/22RBM (the RBM I fitted with a Green Mountain fluted barrel and an aftermarket stock). I took them out to the range last week intending to sight them in and had alot of trouble with the scope rings on the K10/22T. These rings came with the rifle. It was suggested to me by some of the folks at the range that I purchase some better rings and I did. I shopped around on the various sites and settled on some Burris Zee Rings. These rings arrived a few days ago and I just attempted to put them on the rifles after church this morning. I was a bit dismayed to find out that these rings do not fit my scope base that came with the K10/22T. I checked the 10/22RBM as well and it looks like the rings that I bought for that rifle will not fit either. The bases are much too small to clamp the rings onto. I am starting to fear that I bought the wrong rings... Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Do I need different bases (I believe the base on the 10/22RBM is integral so it cannot be changed) or do I need a different type of rings? Are there Ruger specific rings?

I usually shoot open sites with my lever guns and revolers but I wanted to do some target shooting so I recently purchased these two 10/22s intentionally to fit them with scopes for that purpose. I'm afraid that I do not know much at all about scopes though...

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
Mike

Dragoon,

You found that the Zee Rings from Burris are way to large for the dove tail bases that came with you rifles?  The reason for this is the Zee Rings are designed for Weaver type bases, for large rifles not rim fires.  Easy to order the wrong ones.  Your 10/22 RBM should have came with a set of 1" medium Ruger rings.  As for your K10/22T the dove tail bases that came with it requires that you use a set of rings that state that they are for dove tail bases/mounts.  You can order what rings you need from Ruger and they are very good rings.  If you haven't scratched up the Zee Rings then you may be able to return them for the correct rings from Burris.  You need the following,

1" Deluxe Steel 22 Rings from Burris

                 Black-        Matte-        Nickel
Medium     #420072-   #420069-   #420074
High          #420073-   #420076-   #420075

Either Burris or Ruger rings are good rings.  I have both one different 10/22 I have.  Lawdog

Thank you Lawdog! The Zee rings do say Weaver on the box. I guess that was my mistake.  I will take a look and try to find a set of the rings that you mentioned.

The rings on my RBM seem to be OK but the ones on the K10/22T have some problems. First one of the rings is higher than the other. Is this normal? I would have thought that they should be the same. Also I must have over tightened one of the screws as it will no longer hold onto the base. It seems to only get tight for what seems like a eigth of a turn or so and if you tighten it any further it loosens.

I am going to try to find the Burris rings that you mentioned.

thanks again

Dragoon,

The Ruger K10/22T is one I never owned but I have helped a couple of guys work on theirs.  In both cases one ring is higher than the other.  Second it's easy to strip the threads on the clamp screws.  I've done it a few times myself.  I give myself a mental kick in the area of the wallet and tell myself to watch out and not to do it again(till the next time).  Getting new rings is the way to go, trying to fox the old ones, in my opinion, is not worth the effort.  Let me know how everything works out.  Lawdog

Weaver base TO-9 is made for the Ruger 10-22. This base will fit the Burris Zee rings perfectly and are far better then the Ruger rings
