About half the so called foreign cars are actually made in the US now. Toyotas in Kentucky and Tennessee, Hondas, Mercedes, Hundai in Alabama. Kia in Georgia. Toyota also in Mississippi. I think Ford has a plant in Atlanta. Of course, they are not unionised in the southern states with open shop laws. Alabama also has a Michelin plant in Dothan, Uniroyal (now owned by Michelin) in Opelika, Goodyear in Gadsden, Goodrich (now owned by Michelin) in Tuscaloosa, and I think a Firestone plant in Anniston. We have lost all of our textile industry, Russell, West Point Stevens, Playtex, Vanity Fair, Leshnier, all have moved overseas. We are not getting a lot of auto parts suppliers for the foreign assembly plants. Most of what drove our economy the last 10 year was home building. Now it is non-existant. We were building around 500 homes a year around my area the last 10 years, not we are lucky to get 3 a month. This kept a lot of framers, brick masons, electricians, plumbers, landscapers, painters, sheet rock workers, heating and air condition workers, and cabinet makers busy.
