I need help concerning a Lyman powder scale...
« on: March 30, 2009, 03:44:50 PM »
If you have one, I need the specs on the threaded leveling screw.  Can you please tell me what the thread size is and also the length of the threaded portion.
Thanks!

Perhaps you could assist with a model number?

I don't have the model #.  It looks like the RCBS type from a few years ago.  I think it's a model D5.

This is a pic of it.

That's a thought.... I didn't realize they are still in business.  So I tried to find them on Google but computer genius that I am, I could only find their various retailers, not the factory.  I'll keep trying.

Thanks!

Okay, your scale isn't like mine so I can't check it and be sure we will match.  Even so, I strongly suspect that screw is a common type.

Suggest you take the scale body/base with you to a good hardware store, Ace/Lowes/H'depot, etc, to their hardware dept.   See if you can find a section of threaded rod, brass would be best, that fits.  It's probably a number 10 or 12 thread and the rod is usually about 12" long; cut the length you need off that.   Round headed "cap nuts" screwed onto each end and secured with a drop of super-glue would provide a bumper on the bottom and a good thumb knob for the top.  The same store should have the cap nuts.

Thanks, Skunk!

Wncchester - The problem is that I sold the scale & need to furnish the lost parts.  I don't know the thread size.  If I did, I could make replacement parts on my lathe.  You had a good idea with the acorn nuts though!  Thanks anyways.

"I'm curious now.  What is the thread size on your Lyman scale?  Please?"

The leveling screw is 1/4" - 20 x 1 1/2".    A bit larger dia. than I remembered.

I'm sure you're aware that  1/4 - 20 steel threaded rod is cheap and easy to find, I wouldn't do the work to turn it!

Thanks, Wnnchester.  I had some brass stove bolts & nuts that will work until I get the real thing from Lyman.  This is for a "customer".

I was helping a friend sell stuff for the widow of an expired "reloader" when I found out I sent the scale to a person w/o the leveling screw.
