Groundhogs out yet?
« on: March 31, 2009, 02:40:40 PM »
I will be visiting my in-laws the week after Easter, and their farm (45 minutes outside of Pittsburgh) is loaded with groundhogs. Its still cold here in Northern NY, I was wondering if you guys have seen any groundhogs out yet?

I have my 22-250, and 200 rounds of hand-loads ready and waiting!

Thanks!

KAYR1, What county do you hunt in in Pa.?????  :)  I used to go to Clearfield and Indiana Co. for 'chucks but always hunted in July and Aug. I could never bring my self to shoot 'chucks in March to May.  It is plenty legal, just something I couldn't do. :-[  Four or Five years ago I was hunting in Pa. in the fall, and went to a gunshow in Pitt. Ran in to an old guy there who was quite a chuck hunter. I believe he hunted 4or 5 farms in Greene Co. He was asking about a base for a 40X Remington. The guy he was talking to ask if he got many chucks that year. He said he has shot one the day before. He went on to say he had only shot 340 odds chucks that year as he had spent alot of time trout fishing in Somerset Co. where he grewup. I really paid attention to this guy.  :o Visited with him a little while. He said he was making a .2506 for shooting close to buildings so it wouldn't be so noisy :o ::)!!!!WOW, I now really listened. He said he was retired and had 4 40 X Remingtons  all chambered for the 30-338 wildcat!!! Plus he had the old 6-24 B & L scopes on each one. :o It was interesting. I always wanted to hit Green Co. but never did.  My girlfriends daughter in law is looking at buying a farm in Pa. I told her to get one with lots of 'chucks and deer. I am sure she can fine one with chucks, but deer , who knows.
Hope you have a good trip. I will spend Easter hunting coyotes, but may do some chucking in July. What kind of .22-250 are you shooting????? How about a scope?? I had a couple 6-20 Leupolds fitted with dots out to 600 yards for Pa. chuck shooting after I retired. Used them some, but haven't hit it as hard as I thought I would. It is still a great sport. Either my favorite or close. It is hard to tell what I like best: deer, varmits, or bird hunting with my little golden. ;)

KAYR1,

It might depend on which direction you are going the 45 minutes.  North of Pittsburgh it might be a bit sparse hunting them although they are out and about.  I live in Clarion County and I have seen a few, but I sure would hate to watch a field all day--It could be a very long day!!!
I too don't like to shoot them until after the 4th of July as they have young in their den and it seems sort of cruel to kill a mommy and the young starve to death--yet that helps eliminated the pests...
So, good-luck with your ventures...BCB

They are out in central PA.  Got 1 last week, and scared the heck out of another at about 500 yards..

I got my first one today. In the spring they are usually a little slow and lethargic....so I give 'em a "sportin chance"  ;D. Today I killed my first of the season with my Marlin 45-70 using one of those new Hornady 325gr. Flex Tip bullets.  ;)  This G-Hog was about 60 yards and just standing about a foot from the hole.

The big bullet just makes a big hole in and a big hole out. The hog doesn't have enough body mass to make the bullet expand. I'm using a Williams peep sight on my Marlin. It's a great way to keep your shootin skills honed.

In mid-summer I take out the 44 magnum revolver. Don't jerk that trigger.......nice easy squeaze!!! A small trigger jerk will give you that little dust cloud to the left of the 'Hog!! I get much better as the season goes on.

They are out in NW PA.  I have been hunting the goldenrod fields that don't get cut in the summer.  Shot a few last week.

SNOWHOGS! These Pa. Groundhogs are pretty smart! They change their fur to white when it snows out....and you just can't see 'em!

Here in SW Pa. I have seen some hogs so far even when it has been cold. The population in this area isn't what I would like to to be. My brother shoots to many with his .220 swift. I tell him to make it more challenging by using a hornet or handgun. I start my hog hunting after the first cutting of hay is off. End of May , after I'm done turkey hunting.

Well, it was a successful trip. My in-laws live on the line of Butler/Alleghenny Co. Although the weather wasnt great, I managed to shoot 5 groundhogs over the course of the week. The ranges were from 50-200 yards. The 22-250 did a number on them!  I am looking forward to the 4th of July week, when they should really be out. That is, if my brother in law leaves any for me!  Thanks for the responses, and good hunting!
