BRASS /BRONZE/ALUMINUM PEWTER CAST PARTS
« on: April 01, 2009, 10:53:43 AM »
I would like to provide cast parts for guns that can replace missing or plastic items on guns owned by members of this forum. I would have imagined that brass would be the hands down choice of material ,but I have learned after a year of observation not to jump to conclusions, so I'm asking for what might be your material of choice? There might be more than 1 choice ,for different ,or even the same, application. Some materials are much more difficult ,for 1 reason or another, to use,and that will be a factor. Some will not receive much attention at all but that won't necessarily matter.Once I get an idea of the items wanted and the numbers desired ,I can make a better choice of where to begin. So far ,I am considering Brass ,Bronze, Aluminum, and Pewter. Let me know your possible needs, would you please?    Ken

Ken, I suggest you run this project past Graybeard before you do anything here, the GBO Terms of User are very explicit on what can be done as far as any for profit venture.  ;)

What is the feeling about brass vs. bronze?  Brass,it seems, presents problems thay aren't mentioned in bronze work.    Ken

I don't have a problem with this post. I gave a more detailed response in the PM. I still think reading the sticky Tim put up asking about people's desires on such parts is the best source of info you are gonna get on the matter.

A bronze triggerguard and spacer would be my choice. Especially if it is NOT made by Bill Moyers.

Although I have found brass barrel bands and end caps that can be modified to work with our Huntsman's those would be of intrest to me maybe even a brass handle on the original wood ram rods would be neat.I just don't think it could be done on this small of a scale to be able to at least break even with all the time you may have to put into it. Maybe just start by doing some stuff for yourself and your guns then wow us with what ya got.For me with stuff like this the price really does not matter as much as my desires to have something .I am kind of stupid that way if it's something I want and like, it really don't matter what I pay for it if I really want it. It is nice to have something a little different at the range, some brass here and there on a BC would be ok.

For me it would be BRASS & PEWDER.
I have three BCs and would love to dress them up a bit if the price is with in reason.

Trigger guards, forearm caps, spacers, and one each barrel bands.

Let us know when things are happening.

One reply stuck in my mind and that was about the brightness of the brass being a bother while huntingand I can understand that ,especially on a large nose cap. I did't hear of much interest in bronze ,although I found there was quite a range of colors in bronze. I'm still taking a course in smelting and casting from some of the local "artists" who were kind of surprised when a gun-nut showed up in their midst.  I think they will lean towards purplish tones. I'm collecting parts for my furnace and all the loose brass I can find. I haven't had any contact with pewter artists and will have to add that kind of search, when i travel to the big cities .  Ken

I got sidetracked by a number of things including a knee replacement and by the time it had healed enough my "honey-do list had expanded considerably. Hunting has even suffered -no ducks this year- but, even if it causes a divorce, I'm going deer hunting! Purdy stuff wil be on this winter's agenda ,along with straight -grip Monte Carlos. Ken

Sorry to hear about the honey do list ;)

About the deer hunting, just tell her it will save on the meat expense for the upcoming year.

Glad to hear the knee is well.

Bronze is an amazing metal, extremely strong. Looks good too.
Those ancient people were smarter than we give them credit for.
kody, I've got a lot of pre- '82 copper pennies....PM me if you collect them.
I'd like a bronze cast knife blade blank, dagger style,4" to 5" blade length...I'll send pic.
Made of the harder bronze alloy, I've got the percentages of the alloy somewhere, but you probably know what it is.
Let me know when/if you could do that.
