Rem. 700 - Found 2 selling at $300 each. But what calliber to get?

   I usally look at savages to buy, but since these are at $300 bucks its hard to not think about it. I'm not sure what model they are as the employees don't see it on the tags ...but the calibers are in 243win. & 7mm rem. mag..   I don't really know which one to consider buying, i have a savage police 308win and don't like the heavy weight for a carry rifle. 

I've read the .243 is a good a catridge for deer size game and under & the 7mm sounds like a great all round'er to have. I have no personal experiance in either of these rounds so its up in the air, personaly my preferance is in .30 caliber rifles. But I had thought the .243 would be kinda nice as i would like to someday rebarrel a gun for the 358 win. for use as a carry gun. But that is so far in the future that i don't know if i should consider buying it for that reason just yet.

  So what do you guys think. Yay..or..Nay  for the 243/7mm?

Tikker,

Personally, I would take the 7mm Remington Magnum if you reload.  You can always load it "down" to non-magnum ballistics or load it too its fullest potential.  Bullet selection for the .284"/7mm is extremely good also.  It is difficult to do that with the 243 Winchester.

This is a preference choice for me...243.  I have a 700 in 6 mm Its a better round than 243 in my opinion but the 243 is more popular you can get the 243 factory stuff anywhere, and in lots of different loads!

Nothing against the 7mm mag but its not one I have!

Depends...What are you hunting with these???

Elk and up, the 7mm...Deer and smaller, the .243...

I'm partial to a .243 as I've used one since 1980, seen too many that flinch with 7mm...

Nice thing about a short action, if you don't care for the .243 it's pretty easy to rebarrel
to .260, 7mm-08 or .308...

For the most part i only plan on hunting deer and smaller game with it, after thinking on it hard tonight i am leaning towards the 243. I really like the idea of the long range ability of the 7mm but i don't think i'll be useing it for its real potential as others do. Hunting in N.C. doesn't give many things larger than deer and i don't think i'll be hunting bear anytime soon.

Also, is $300 for a rem 700 a good deal? I am guessing its an ADL or SPS, i'm not sure really but i'm going there tomorrow to get a hands on feel for them both when i have cash in hand.

I'm in NC as well, .243 is all you need out to 300 yards on deer...I've also killed a few bears with mine...

Does the rifle have a hinged floorplate so you can unload without cycling the shells through the chamber??? If so, it's a BDL, if not a ADL...

Where abouts are you in NC???

   When i seen the guns i didn't ask to handle them as i usally like savage, but after thinking its sounds like a deal not to pass up on. I'm heading there tomorrow to get the full jist of what they are. I liked the idea of savages barrel nut being on the outside and people being able to change the barrels on their own. I'm not so familiar with remingtion though so i'm guessing i would need a gunsmith to perform the task.
   At the moment i'm in south florida, i had moved down here years ago but now just about have enough money to put a big chunk on a house up NC. After i finish up with college class's to be an EMT I'll be looking at places near or west Asheville, i used to live in Hiawassee/Murphy for a few years prior. Being this far south in florida blows unless you like salt water fishing or shopping.....I'd rather fish for trout or bass in cool weather and hunting isn't anything to think about where i'm at.  And to top it all off, all these darn tourist's cause traffic jams when they can't figure out where to go....this is the place where road rage is a big problem. I've had to lock up the brakes in the bronco one to many times cause someone wants to use the fast lane as a turning lane durring a green light when i'm doing 55mph.  Good Times!

If they are BDL's or CDL's I think that's a pretty fair price.  I'd get the 7 Mag.  Only because I don't have one.  I got a 243 and one varmint rifle is enough...  ;)  ;D

     So i ended up buying the gun tonight! Been thinking really hard on which to choose from and i figured the 243 would fit me better in the long run. And truth is if i want a long action gun i'll be buying a 30-06 but i doubt i'll need one for any hunting i'll be doing.

    This weekend i'm going to take it out and use the iron sights for now, i've never shot a center fire that way so it should be fun. I found some camo stocks for sale on E-Bay so i think i might give that a try to give it a nicer look to it. Maybe later on give it a good coating of OD Green in DuraCoat for a better finish.

   Anyways So far i am happy with the purchase, I always wondered about the Remington 700's so this should give me a chance to see their worth. I like the action and the saftey is nicer than my savage, finding the bolt release took me less than a minute to find...interesting place to put it.

Well now its time for some Remington Porn for you Guys!  :D

My hunting buddy has one just like that, he has a 3x9x40 Leupold VX-II mounted on it...I adjusted the trigger and sighted it in for him...

It is the most accurate rifle I have ever shot with a wide varity of ammo as well...
It shoots those CoreLokts as well as the 100gr Hornadys and the Federal Premium
85gr HPBT Sierras all into groups that you can cover with a nickle at 100 yards...

What's funny, my Ruger M-77 that I bought in 1980 shoots well, with certain ammo...
But...I've free floated, bedded, put a Shilen barrel on, had a trigger job, etc...
Except for me adjusting the trigger, his is  a stock rifle...

I would advise cleaning the barrel before you ever shoot it...It's amazing what comes out before it's shot...

     It's been 4 days since the range and i just got around to taking pics of the targets i have. All shots inside 100yds were in the 8" orange circle so i feel very safe shooting at that range on a rest as  most of all were with-in 4 to 5" groups and standing i tried a 4 shot group with 3 shots were in orange and fourth in the 5 ring.

All in all i am very happy with it. I really want my groups to tighten up at 200yds though. I tried a 4 shot group at that range and only one came inside the 5 ring with the others at the left edge and one at the bottom with group measured out to a hair over 12".  I've been very tempted to by some Truglow iron sights for the gun but decided that a low power scope would better dress the gun with what i'll be doing with it.   So tonight i bought a Buckmaster 4x40mm scope for it and i'm waiting a reply from DNZ DedNutz to see what scope base to use.

    I can't wait to see what kind of groups i can get out of the gun with a scope ;D

My wife shoots that same rifle in 243 and it gets great groups from 100 gr Federal blue box ammo, cheap and they do fine on Texas whitetails!!

Well that's what I get for posting before I read the whole thread.  I think the .243 is a great cartridge, but as Dirty Harry says, you have to know its limitations.  Where I am hunting a shot longer than 300 yds would be pretty much impossible to find and I am comfortable with the caliber for deer to that distance with a good rifle. 

I think you'll like it.
