I have wanted to do one of these for some time but I think barrel life would be short. It is the 22-243 Middlested. Dale

I know someone who did the 17 with a 222 mag
I'll ask him numbers if you want, I know he said it smoked
He blew the Gun up Long Story but he's OK

17-08, are you saying 308 necked down to 17? If so, I need to get in the barrel business.

I would bet a 17-08 would send a bullet at least 5,000 FPS.

That is a good point also. At those speeds the bullet may come apart and not even reach the target. Dale

im just curious if you could make it. and if it wouldntt destroy the barrel, to make one.

but from what i've read, those speeds would destroy the rifle in a heartbeat...

Now I do like the sound of that but it may still be to hot. Now you got me thinking!!!!!!!!!

The 17 Rem I think is still about 4,000 FPS. I don't know I still think you are pushing it. There are plenty of rounds out there that shoot fast and flat. I think my next Groundhog rifle will be a 22-250 in a Remington 700 Varmint. Dale

The .17 Remington basically is a .17-223 as it is on the .223 case. A .17-.222 Mag or the .204 Ruger case necked to .17" would perhaps hold a bit more powder but even the .17 Remington is getting quite over bore and is about all the powder you want to send down that bore diameter.

The .17 Fireball pushes 20s at 4000 fps and the .17 Remington can push 25s even faster than that.

I have a 20-06 part way done, the dies work good, I have a barrel and the reamer is partly ground, I think it will be fun. Larry

That bullet will probably travel 6,000 FPS. That is way crazy. How fast do you expect it to go? How many rounds do you think you can shoot before you burn out the barrel? Thanks for sharing Dale

No. 5400-5500 is the limit as that is the speed of the powder. In order to increase the speed over that you would have to move to some of the new triplex powders which unless you have a line into the company you will not get any.

a .17-06 is pretty crazy but with a fast enough twist you can likely run a 30-35g bullet at 4500+. Heck of a long range .17 but 300-400 shots and you'll be done.
