Turkey time and the Redbuds are blooming
« on: April 02, 2009, 02:16:02 AM »
Time to get the old custom H&R turkey gun out  and shove a 3" mag full of #6's into it. The decoy is straight and the slate is sweet as a opera singer. I damn sure aint' hauling all that stuff on my Harley either. Those oil field trucks have that road so rutted and ruff that i would rattle every bolt off the thing and me too. Anybody else tuning up?  It would look awsome though having that Tom strapped on and the sawed off scoped turkey gun on my back pulling into the check station.
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

Our season opened 2 weeks ago and I haven't made it to So. GA yet.   :(  I even have 2 gobblers that have been staked out since deer season!  Just got to much other stuff going on.  This weekend we got a run to SC for one of our chapter annuals, then next weekend to AL for an annual then TN.  April is pretty full.   :-\  But, I WILL be doing a lot of riding and partying with my Brothers!   ;D

AtlLaw do you run with the Legacy Vets and or the Vietnam Vets any. They throw a heck of  party/rally in Oklahoma every year. This year is in Davis Oklahoma at the Washita Hideaway. They rattle the woods.

Got the Slate call out this weekend and the decoys. Both needed a little straightening out.

Woke up at 5 am to a howling 25-30 mph wind and damp misty conditions. The oldest son arrived and away we went to the lease. Got there and shut the door on the jeep and two started gobbling down the creek bottom. Birds answered all morning but kept moving off with their hens. We relocated at 8 to the top of a ridge with a Bois D arc thicket and the same thing. They would answer then move off. The son had to be at work at 10:30 so about 9 I was getting a little impatient. My theory is when you have sat as long as you can and want to get up make yourself stay 30 minutes more. Gazzam out of the blue birds answered from two different directions at the same time. I hit the call one more time and had two huge toms in front of my son racing for the jake decoy. Big bird 9 inch beard and a shade over 1" spurs. He was a young one but a bigun.    They do move in the wind and can hear a call even in the hurricane that was blowing this morning. Just be still and have all the patience you can muster

Looking back through this thread I see that I'm in the same shape I was last year, minus the riding!   :(

I sure would like to get out at least one time this year.   ::)  Heck, I still haven't even taken the riot barrel off my 835 yet!   :'(

Glad you're getting out though.  Good lick!   ;D

Speaking of 835's. My son used mine this morning and the 3 1/2" Federal hull would not eject after the shot. The slide came back but it liked like a 1/8th of an inch clearing the ejection port. Never had that problem before. The boy did say that even shooting the turkey those 3 1/2 mags are brutal on ya. Only had to shoot 15 yards  could have dropped it with a field load.
