Rossi 223 pencil barrel gun
« on: April 02, 2009, 01:51:51 PM »
Found a little light weight Rifle  new for $200 out the door.  Not a great price but it does have Youth wood stock.  Now to get some decent ammo and take it to the range.  I know it has the 'slow' twist but have heard some people having good results with mid-range bullets ( 52-62 ) depending on the length of bullet I guess.  Has anyone else tried these bullet weights in factory ammo?

Well, I went out to the Gun Range with the Rossi and shot a few rounds off just to see what she liked.  I tried the PMC brass cased 55gr. FMJ.  I had two misfires out of five I tried.  I then tried five Prvi Partizan brass cased 55gr.  Soft point.  She likes them!  They all fired!  I did not save the target as it started raining again.  I will say they were all in the black @ 100yds but not much better than 4" groups.  I have not adjusted my little 2-6 scope yet.  It seems to be shooting low and right with an 'elbow' mount.  I guess I will have to get the 'sled' out and try it next weekor two.  I am going to have to find some more of the Prvi stuff but I just picked up a 40 round pack of W white box 40 gr at Wal-fart.  That is all they had.  The barrel did not seem to heat up too quick and I held it at the forearm hinge.  So far, so good.  I am certainly not a great shot.  I'm 58 and cannot see very well.  I will try to do better! ;D

Though it's not an H&R Handi rifle, you might want to check out all the FAQs in the centerfire forum over there. I am sure most all of the suggestions there will apply in your case.. forearm pressure, bore smoothness, latch isues, etc will all help in your case.
Those WWB 45gr JHP's shoot excellent in our Handi rifles, wish I could find more around these parts.. but then again Handloading is such a freedom  ;D
My suggestions , if I may, a GOOD barrel scrub with Flitz and time to let the slim barrel cool enough between shots.

I have a Rossi heavy barrel and I can second the WWB 45gr JHP accuracy.  They shoot about the best of all the ammo I have tried.
Thanks,

Sage and good info.  Thanks guys.  I will take your advice.  I will probably try serveral more brands of ammo in the 40-62gr range just to see what she may like.  My son and son-in-law both have AR-15's so the unused ammo will not go to waste! ;D.  I am a Marlin man mostly.  Because I am left-handed I thought the single shot would be fun.  I do have a Rossi 22/20ga.  shoots like a dream but the 20ga kicks like a mule! ;D  I will try the methods suggested and try to get back out in the next two weeks.  I will try to have a target this time.  LOL!
