How to cut butt pad
« on: April 04, 2009, 02:35:48 AM »
Im going to shorten my synthetic stock by one inch but then the bottom of the butt pad will be longer than the stock because of the declining taper of the stock. Im trying to get some different ideas about what method would you use to cut and conform the butt pad to the shorter stock ?
P.S. I have the gray rubber pad with a plastic backing from a Stevens 200

Never mind at this point as I have messed up the factory butt pad. Im looking into other options at this time and hope to return with a good solution.
Thanks

My 30-06 came with a plastic butt pad. So I took it off and put a larger rubber butt pad on it. I had to cut the stock off the with of the new butt pad and subtract the with of the plastic butt pad. I cut it off my self and squired the stock over the winter sanding,
checking.

After about 20 years I got a gunsmith To check out it didn't need much more rubber removed.

Check out Youtube for some ideas.  Just search for "how to install a recoil pad".

When I put on a recoil pad I put it on the stock and use a pincle to trace aroung the stock. Rember to alow for the toe and take it down with a grinder to the out side of the line. If done properly this will leave you with alittle over hang all the way around the stock that this off with sand paper useing a fine sand paper for the finish.
