20 Gauge Project

Several years ago I put together a scoped Tracker II (back when you had to drill and tap them yourself) for deer hunting.  Indiana changed it's laws two years ago to allow pistol caliber rifles, which I much prefer so the Tracker II has languished in the gunsafe ever since.

I got the idea to make my wife a 'point and click interface' home defense weapon, and this seemed to be an ideal starting point.

I shopped the classified ads here at Greybeard and found a 20 gauge barrel for an excellent price and went to work.

I measured a generous 18 1/2" from the breechface and marked a line, matched the factory setback and drilled and tapped a 6-48 hole for a bead, then broke out the hacksaw, files and stones.

Here's the finished product.

   

The amazing thing is I just got back from the range, and in the process of testing it I wanted to see how well it fired slugs.  I stepped back about 30 yards and fired two off hand, with just the oversized bead for reference.  The two slugs were 1 1/2" center to center 1" from the X.  I'll take that any day of the week.

I just put together one just like that. ;D
All of my Pardners are short barreled. I have a 12 and 20 both cut to 20" and the other 20 is 18.5" like yours.
I love to carry the shorty's in the woods ;)

i bought a 12 ga  andy  cut off , and i was totally shocked  at how it handled  shooting slugs , very accurate i think its because yu cut out all the  choke and  leave it room to  come out of the barrel untouched ill say?

Shaner, nice to hear again of how well that "shorty" with the applied open iron sights shoots for you. Later this year I would like to see some "meat on the pole" pictures with it, either deer or hog....<><....:)

my topper has pallet wood painted camo,18 1/4 " barrel, 20 gauge smoothbore and my wife is starting to call it HERS.......

id like to  my deer hunting  luck is terrible hahaha , if it can happen it will, id have more luck fillin it maybe with dog hahahah J/K hahah

Shaner, ya gotta git yer butt up here.  There were nine nice deer in the Alfalfa, 30 - 50 yards behind the barn yesterday at 4 p.m.  I'm trying to clear venison out of the freezer so we're having 2007 tenderloin tonight.  I've got to go through it and pull out all the 2007 cuts and jerk them.  There's  plenty of 2008 to last til October, November and December.

shaner and pete, your both invited to the camp in Maine for deer hunting but you have to get used to the fact that you can roam the Miane woods for a week or 2 sometimes without even seeing a deer. It is far from what it used to be, although from the advertising for deer hunting you would never realize that. The last two BAD winters for deer survival and coyotes have really, really hurt the deer herd. But have no fear, the anti's have succeeded in outlawing snares for coyotes (we are saved!!). Global warming my butt, not from the last couple of Maine winters. I believe what we (mankind) is doing is having an impact on the climate but I also believe in the cyclical nature of weather and weather patterns, both long and short term.....<><....:)


Oh yes, I just remembered, Kalifornia is going to outlaw black cars, WE ARE SAVED AGAIN!!!!.... ::)

Andy, Thanks, I may just take you up on that one.  I haven't hunted the Maine woods since the 1960s and deer weren't plentiful then.......But it is Hunting, not shooting.  The invitation works the other way too.  You guys are welcome here any time.

Just be glad you don't have wolves and cougars in your mix.  At least not yet.

You're 100% on the global warming.  I believe we were on an up spur in a decline to an ice age that got everyone excited.  Our last two winters here were "Old Time Winters"....not a sign of global warming.  It's still cold enough I had to come in a minute to warm up while sighting in my Handi .30-06.  The newly put together .357 is next on the bench.

You and I won't be here for it, but when the ice age arrives, it'll really stir things up.  I'd like to be able to see it, sit around and chuckle.

here's my cut down 20 gauge topper...no choke....i feel pretty safe in the woods with a few slugs and a few #4 buckshot loads
