Can You hunt turkey with a .22

Just found out that in Texas you can! There was a discussion on my local friday night radio outdoors show.

Is that universal or is it just here in Texas?

Used to be able to use rifles here in Bama but not in a LONG LONG time. I've done it and it works fine if you place the shot properly. Now it's shotguns or handguns with iron sights only.

There is rumored to be Turkey all over Texas. Now Here in the eastern part they are like Big foot, you dont see too many hides stretched on barn doors, so to speak! But in west and central they are abundant. Next time I go out there I'm gonna bring the Mach II and see what I can do with that very accurate rifle, I will have to investigate the scope legality and all but it sounds like a challenge! Now I am talking head shot!

Can't testify about centerfire but they were saying .22 was legal so I am assuming(thats dangerous) .17 mach II would be legal also.  Will do some more investigation.

Yes you can hunt turkeys with a 22, whether it's legal or not depends on the state. I'd imagine thousands of turkeys are shot each year with 22s.

Don't get yourself in trouble, shotgun only for Easterns in Tx, and a lot of the state is closed to Rios in the spring.

fully automatic firearms are NOT LEGAL.

firearms equipped with silencers or sound-suppressing devices are NOT LEGAL.

a shotgun is the only legal firearm for hunting migratory game birds and lesser prairie chicken (see Definitions - Legal Shotgun, pg. 69).

Dang Tim, I mean thanks Tim,  ;D  Not sure what kinda Turkeys we have at the Ranch in Junction, could be those Easterns are the sort that i said we rarely see here but I will definitly look into it.



Yea funny thing about that Tim, Those eastern turkeys are Rare kinda like Big foot!

We dont have any that I have seen down here on the coast!

Shotgun only in the spring, shotguns, rifles, handguns in the fall in PA.  .22lr works well with a head shot, or a hit at the base of the wing on broadside shots.  Whatever rifle you use, avoid hits to the breast for obvious reasons

 ;) I have shot most of my gobblers with a rifle. Everything from the .22 Hornet to .270. I never tried a common 22 lr. My cousin did in the 60's in Pa. Knocked down a couple turkey that got away. Went back to is 06 after that. Last fall I hit a jake with a hornet, that almost fluttered far enough that I could hav elost him. A .222 or 223 is about perfect and very sporting. With a shot gun it was pretty easy to whack a gobbler. :-[

   Ya'll doing them head shots on turkeys with a rifle are alot quicker and better shot than me.  I quite often carry a handgun(scoped usually), but gave up on head shots long years ago.  A turkey that is standing still has a head that is in constant motion, at least it seems that way to me.  It's not hard to miss a head shot with a shotgun(don't ask how I know).  I've used a 16.25" .22Mag Contender very successfully for years, also my 10" .218Bee.  With either one, I wait for a complete broadside shot and aim at the point where the wing sweeps down and starts to slope to the rear.  gets the vitals...bang-flop and very little meat damage.  Hope it works again here saturday morning(opening here in VA).
