How long since Speer bullet boxes said this?
« on: April 05, 2009, 12:27:18 PM »
"Manufactured by Vernon D. Speer, Lewiston, ID"

I have a tattered old cardboard box of 102 45gr. bullets which the box says are .223" with a 4 cal. ogive.  My vernier calipers verify the measurement.  I take these to be Hornet bullets for the older Hornet rifles that used .223" bullets rather than .224"

I'm curious as to how old these would be?  1960s?  1950s?  I haven't been around that long so I don't have any way to know.  They worth anything to anybody other than an old Hornet shooter?  I'm not going to put them down the tube of my 223 Rem.  Thanks for any help.

I was looking into the Speer# 9 Manual printed in 1974. It shows no .223 bullets for the Hornet but mentioned in the article that .223 bullets were available in 40 and 45 gr weight.

They are from the early 50's. I once bought out an estate and had dozzens of full Vernon Speer boxes from that era and sold them on ebay back when you could. It just so happened that one of the bidders was the fiancee of Vernon's great grandson and wanted to buy it for a Christmas present for her husband to be. We exchanged some interesting emails back then (2002) and the entire family is still geared to the shooting sports. They are worth more to sit on the mantle then to shoot them. Just my opinion.

Thank you, fellows.  I think it's a kinda neat box of bullets, and I don't have a .223" bore gun, so I'll probably just keep them sitting around for nostalgia's sake.
