Remington Nylon 10C : Pros and Cons?
« on: April 05, 2009, 04:43:48 PM »
Dear Guys,

I know that the Nylon 66 was the all time classic.  Unfortunately, I am highly allergic to rifles that feed through tubes in the buttstock.  (I break out in hives!)

What is the story on the Nylon 10C?  I like detachable magazines.  Was this rifle reliable?  Can you find spare mags that actually work?  Any big problems with it?

  Thanks for all comments.

I've had mine since the early 70's and never had a problem as long as I kept er clean. I found extra mags at gun- parts inc. the only issue is mounting a scope on that receiver cover, seemed to change zero from time to time. solved that problem by sticking a lite weight red dot on it. no more wandering zero! mine is a truck gun and seen a lot of knock a abouts but keeps on running like the day i bought it. the one thing i found out the rifle doesen't like is oil in it's inerds.I keep it dry and it does fine. ;D
Deceased due to a 3rd stroke on Dec. 12, 2011.

RIP John.

Mine was handed down to me after my grandfather passed away, but before that I had been shooting it for years. I would have to say that it's the most used rifle I've ever had, it's gone coon hunting more nights than I could count, it's shot dozens of rats in the barn, and every fall it fills the pot with squirrels. Growing up I didn't real know what a scope was, no one used them and to this day I still shoot this rifle with open iron sights.

The most impressive shot I've ever made in my life was with this rifle, our farm had it's fair share of woodchucks and it was the responsibility of myself and that little 10C to rid the farm of as many as I could and I did quite well with it. One night just before dusk I saw a woodchuck standing way across a pretty good sized field. It was calm, so I set the rifle on top a fence stake, held plenty high and squeezed off two quick shots. I walked to where I shot at that woodchuck and there I found him dead with two holes about 2 inches appart in his chest. The shot was almost 250 yards!

One thing my little 10C doesn't like is remington ammo and actually is shoots and feeds very well with the Federal bulk box cheap ammo, so that's what I stick with.

Another little adventure I had with the rifle was one morning I was getting ready to water some cows in another barn before the sun came up and as I was carrying those pales of water I approached the barn and something started to snarl and growel at me and it scared me half to death. I dropped the pales and quick ran back up to the main barn to get the flash light and when I ran back down there I saw a very large, unhappy, and sickly looking raccoon! As fast as my legs could carry me I went to the house and returned with the little 10C and layed it across my arm that was holding the flash light. By then though the raccoon had moved to a different part of the barn and I tracked it down to a back grain room that didn't have a light in it. I very slowly approached the door way and started to pan from one side of the room to another and as the light hit the corner to my right hand side the raccoon lunged strait at me and the very second the raccoon came at me my flash light went out! It all happened so fast, but a split second after the light went out I pulled the trigger. It was a total shot in the dark, I hit the flash light on the wall, it came back on and the raccoon lay dead on the floor!

Not sure what would have happened had I not just fired, but thankfully I did. As you can see I've created some very lasting memories with my little 10C and I hope that anyone who is lucky enought to own one can create some of there own!
