Interesting alloy........
« on: April 05, 2009, 07:46:57 PM »
I am just getting into casting, but I had my wife (a dental assistant) save the lead foil from their x-ray packets (that is before they went digital).  Today I actually melted it down.

I had thought it would be soft lead - but boy was I wrong!  This stuff has a much higher melt point then pure lead and is a lot harder then WW's.  I am thinking it must have a lot of antimony, since if it was hardened with a lot of tin the melt point should be lower not higher.

Has anyone had experience with this stuff?  Any idea what it is?

my brother in law is a retired dentist. He used to give me alot of it. The stuff i got from him had an osha printout that said it was pure lead with 1 percent atimony. It was harder then pure but not as hard as ww. For the most part i treated it as pure. I did some looking around back when i was fooling with it and there are differnt mixes used to make it though.
