New (to me) H&R Mod 88 12 ga full with pics and a couple of questions

I picked up a 1986 Mod 88 H&R 12 ga full for a song the other day.













It has some light rust on the receiver and the barrel that isn't that noticeable.
No big deal really as I got it to be a shooter anyways. Not a museum piece.
The barrel has a 3" chamber and measures 27.5 inches from the muzzle to the
breach. Not sure how long that makes the barrel? Maybe it was cut down?
The one issue it has is a lot of side to side play when the action is
open. My other H&R's are rock solid when their actions are open. If I had
to grade the lock up I would probably give it a "C". Nothing like my new
SB2's, that's for sure, but then again I only paid $65 for it. I looked at the
hinge on the barrel and it doesn't look hammered or anything. I'm not sure
what is causing the excessive play when the action is open. Anyone have
any ideas?

The rust will come off with a bit of good gun oil and some 4-0 steel wool, or if you live near the coast get some "brass wool" at a good boatyard supply. The barrel has noit been cut and it what is commonlky referred to as a 28" barrel (by H&R/NEF standards). If the action is tight when closed (especially without the forearm attached) you are good to go. Great gun, shoot it and have fun....<><....

Hey thanks Andy! I think I found the problem. I need to put some shim between
the forend and the piece that rides up against the receiver. I'm not sure what
the correct name is for that piece?

Not a big deal Bob as with most of us the hips get a little loose with age as said if she locks good when closed all you need to do is keep shootin it and she will never die. Kurt

Thanks Kurt! I fixed it! I put some shim between the forend and that piece
and the wiggle is gone! It locks up tighter too! I think I'm going to get a
20 ga modified barrel for for this receiver while I'm at it. Probably a little more
easy on the shoulder than the 12 ga.

10-4 Andy. I took your advice and used some Break Free and some 0000 steel wool
to the metal and some Lemon Pledge to the wood. This sweet little shotgun looks
like brand new! I think it will make a nice back up or a loaner for someone who wants
to go out shooting and doesn't have a shotgun. This is my first H&R shotgun. I'm sure
it won't be my last. Especially at the price that I was able to pick this little jewel up for!
