My Krag belonged to my father, and it took more than its share of elk and deer in Idaho where I was raised.
I also took 2 whitetails and 2 mule deer with it, when I could pry it out of his hands.
It was already semi-sporterized when he bought it in pawn shop in my home town for $15. I believe I was only 4 or 5 years old at the time he bought it.
Before he passed away, as a present I had it restocked and reblued and had a good reciever sight and front sight installed on it. I was not sure how the blue would take on that case hardened receiver, but it was a "buff" blue and came out beautiful. Also had the bolt handle chromed.
I shoot it now for fun. It hates spitzer bullets. Likes 180gr RN and I have also put 220gr RN through it. Damned thing is I can't find any company that makes 200gr RN any more....which I think is the ideal bullet for the 30-40. I am thinking of getting a custom 200gr GC mould made. At 200grs of hardcast, I believe I could load the Krag up to its full potential and not have to back off on velocity because of a lead bullet. I know I could do that at the original design specs of a 220gr lead bullet, but think a 200 gr would be better.
Same reason I had a 280gr GC mould made for my 35 Whelen!!!
