Recommendation For People Living In Wolf Country
« on: April 06, 2009, 03:57:39 PM »
I just reread a book that I throughly loved.  The title is "Alaska's Wolf Man"  "The life and times of Frank Glasser"  This book is based on his life as a commercial meat hunter, trapper, dog musher, collector of specimens for the government, and government predator control officer.  Even if you don't want to know about the wolves, the information he gives about Moose, Caribou, Sheep, and Bears is well worth the read.

I loaned the book to a friend that is an anti hunter, after reading it he now understands many of the things I discuss with him.  He has changed his attitude towards Predator Control.  He loaned it to several of his friends, they all said they had read it when I got to Florida this last January.  Everyone of them said they enjoyed it, and they had changed their minds on some of the things they had thought about wildlife management.

I also recommend it to everyone.  Personally I feel that all young people in school should have to read it.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Sourdough, did they make a movie about Glasser? I've seen one where the guy lives among them and eats mice. Could that be the same guy?

Sourdough:

Can you give me the gist of the story? What is in it that compels people of differing initial opinion to change their minds? Thanks.

Oldshooter: No different person.

Questor:  Frank glasser came to Alaska when there was very few people living here.  He lived out in the wilderness alone, and observed the wildlife in their natural settings.  He made his living out there amoungst the wildlife.  Frank was able to see things even biologist today are unable to witness.  Frank loved the outdoors, but he realized what it takes to manage wildlife, and that to have good healthy populations, management must take place.  Otherwise when nature does it there is drastic negative results that last for decades.

I just found it a very interesting read.  Frank talks about during the fall rut how the bulls follow the cows around.  As the cow urinates the bulls drink the urine.  He found bull Moose and Caribou, with up to a gallon of cow urine in their stomachs.  Ever wonder why a male deer"s meat will stink so bad getting close to the rut.  Moose and Caribou are members of the deer family, and if they do that I am sure Whitetail and Mulies do it too.

Frank also talks about the way Wolves and Bears kill Moose, Caribou, and Sheep.  This is things the people living in the new Wolf Country should know.

I'll bet you are thinking of the movie "Never Cry Wolf". It was loosely based on a book of the same title by Farley Mowat detailing his wolf studies. I think he worked for the Ministry of Wildlife in Canada.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?
