[Is it a pre 64  feed ?]  - Nope.

There were no pre-64 "XTR's", for one thing - nor letter-prefixed serial numbers AFAIK.

It sounds like you have a USRA (US Repeating Arms) Model 70, made after 1982, and probably 1984-85, IMHO.

I can't recall just when the CRF (controlled round feed/claw extractor) actions were re-introduced, but IIRC it may have been around 1991 - is your bolt a push-feed or a CRF ?

Yours was manufactured very early in 1988, which would mean it has to be a push feed.  The Classics with CRF didn't come out until later, and were not serialized in that range.

I have a few mod 70's that were buil durring the "crappy" years that shoot very well. I have also traded off a few that did not shoot as well as I liked. I would shoot it and see how it groups. I would not worry too much about it not being CRF.

I agree with Tman.  Don't worry about the so-called crappy years, or the push-feed vs. CRF business.  Just take it out and shoot it!  You never know until you shoot it.  One of my Classics was built during a time they supposedly had some problems, however, this particular rifle is one of the best rifles I own!  Generally, rifles built during these "problem" years, only a small percentage had any actual problems anyhow.  It just gets way overblown on the internet.  One loud-mouth makes everybody think they ALL are "crappy".   ;D
