Sir Winston Churchill
« on: April 07, 2009, 02:08:49 PM »
One of my all time heroes.

That tiny island stood ALONE and unconquered from '39 to '41.

Through the sheer force of his will he galvanized his magnificent country's resistance to the armies of darkness for two solid years.

A single man saved the world.

What say you?

He was a great man but I think he would roll over in his grave if he saw how England treated it's citizens now.

"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few"  In another quote Churchill said if I may paraphrase,  It was the body of the people, indeed the race that saved the world, I was fortunate enough to be the roar.  Symbols like Churchill were important, his days as warrior were past by 1939 and the English Empire was saved by those sworn to serve thier monarch, not thier prime minister.  He had great courage, mental capacity, and tenacity, but 1939-1941 England was held for the Monarch by the fleet, army and air force.  I had the great good fortune to serve beside Her Majesty's Highlanders.  They were in existance before Churchill was born, and still serve today.  Without trained infantry, marines, air force, and seaman England would have been doomed.  Churchill was the war time leader of those troops and never claimed to be anything else.

Churchill rocks! I'm trying to find a good biography of him. Benjamin Franklin is my favorite American hero. The dude was awesome.

GrimJim:

I'm just speculating, but somehow I don't think he'd be surprised. He was elected PM when all the feel-good nonsense didn't work and things became desperate. he lived to see the ascent and climax of the nanny state. After he won the war, they cast him aside.

A great leader - and the right man at the right time in history.  He also fully recognized the evil in Stalin, but knew "he had to side with the devil" to beat Hitler.

He hated the pacifism of Chamberlain and the French he said Hitler had to be stopped by  strength not diplomacy!

Quote
Britain and France had to choose between war and dishonour. They chose dishonour. They will have war.

He knew it was inevitable!

He was even heard to say that if Hitler invaded Hell, he would speak in favor of the devil in the house of commons.

We are lucky he was where he was in those times!

He was pretty savy on the economy as well. He once said "trying to tax a population into prosperity is like standing in a bucket and trying to lift it by the handle". Don't know that it can be said much better.

I didn't realize there were so many history buffs in the forum. This is getting better and better.

Canada you keep proving that you have very little character or integrity by your continuous thread sabotage and  mischievous provocation !

Winston Churchill on Jews relocating to Palestine;

Quote
'You ask me to repudiate the Balfour Declaration and to stop (Jewish) immigration. This is not in my power ... and it is not my wish ... It is manifestly right that the scattered Jews should have a national centre, and a national home to be re-united, and where else but in Palestine, with which for three thousand years they have been intimately and profoundly associated?
We think it will be good for the world, good for the Jews, good for the British Empire, but also good for the Arabs who dwell in Palestine...they shall share in the benefits and progress of Zionism.

Do your homework before you besmirch someones character!

He also had his hands in the design of a torpedo bomber, and it was pretty poor at that. I believe he was a Sea Lord at that time( The Brits do have weird ranks) ;)
