found a weird bullet today.
« on: April 08, 2009, 02:30:58 PM »
i forgot it on the table at the range or i would post some pictures.

it was a plated/jacketed cylinder .44cal(my estimate) no point or anything. the only reason i realized it was a bullet was the fact i had rifling marks, and one end was kinda mushroomed/bent over.

what would be the purpose of a cylindrical bullet?

If you mean a wadcutter, it's made for accuracy at low velocities.

They're called wadcutters.  They cut neat round holes in targets.

Okay, it's more clear in my mind now.  Sadly, a few folks seem to think a copper plated lead bullet is "jacketed" and that can get confusing to deal with.

More likely what you found was one of the old half-jacketed hollow points once sold by Speer.  The soft noses would often blow off on impact and leave only the jacketed body, a sort of mush-nosed cylinder actually.

I get strange bullets in boxes all the time.
I'll buy a box of lead 230 grain and occasionally something else will end up in the box like a 255 grain Semi wad cutter in the 250 grain range.

+1 on the Raineer bullets. They have a lead core with an electroplated copper jacket. I believe you can get them in both .357 and .429 flavors. they are special made for shooting indoors to keep lead from fling around in the air. Good Luck and Good Shooting
