Curtism-

Is there not enough room under your rock for you and obama?

If o can't even make a decision regarding one hostage, pray tell how he will react if we have another 9/11!

I wonder what would happen if the pirates took an Israeli ship. How many of them do you think would make it home alive?

Armchair quarterbacks. Easy to call the game when you have nothing on the line! Funny how this is news now that an american is hostage? We should send in the FBI negotiators(?) to deal with scum whose only language is violence. Dust them all, the captain was killed by friendly fire, end of story, give the 10 million to his widow!

WHAT ABOUT THE "PIRATES" CIVIL LIBERTIES???  Let the ACLU at them and it won't be a ransom.  It will be the fine that the idjit presidant will gladly pay because the media says the polls would get a higher percantage of votes.  Russia, Israel and South America have the right response to kidnappers.  Strike quickly, effectively and if unfortunately there are collateral casualties, so be it...

The pirates have already won.  They have succeded in holding THE most powerful country in the world hostage, while the politicians and the media decide on which course of action would be the most beneficial to THEM.

The presidant was unavailable for comment as he was bowing to the King of a lesser nation...
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

Put scuba guys in the water, sink the boat.  As they float around grab the captain, let the rest swim.  Take the Captain to the ship, leave the area.  Let the pirates swim.

As for snipers, a know a few that would love to have the chance to make that shot.  They can do it.

Wait till dark and let seals quietly take them out of the boat one at a time.

OK, there are three different scenarios, take your pick.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Still in favor of paying the ransom, retrieving the Captain, and then blowing the pirates to hell, and beyond.  Money and all.

That gives Curt his civil end to the drama.

Subsequently shows other pirates that neither their lives, nor their precious money mean jack squat.

What incentive does the next group have, knowing that they can get their ransom, and still meet allah regardless?

As far as the money, we have peed away 10 million on pork in the blink of an eye.  In this case, Maersk is already willing to part with the cash.  Might as well give the Navy a little live fire exercise.

My question is-

How did they get the captain?

 - or did he give himself up to save his crew?

The captain gave himself up for his ship and crew. He needs to be saved! Send in a Seal team, and get him back! And, if memory serves me correctly, Maritime law says, an act of piracy, is an act of war! After they get the captain back, no troops need to be sent in. Somala has to have a port that the pirate's are working out of. Blow it to smitherens. Then work on the coastal village's.
My nephew was in the Marine's in the mid 90's. 2 month's before the Blackhawk down incident took place there, the ship he was on made a stop there. Absolutley no law and order, drug lords run everything. Total waste of a country. gypsyman

You bring in the negotiator (as they have) and try to get a peacefull surrender.

The next step would be taking the pirates into custody, interogate, and charge them.

Finally, there needs to be a cooperative worldwide effort to gain control of the seas.

At this point, we're going about the hostage situation the correct way.
What will happen after this situation is resolved has yet to unfold.
A problem that has been ignored for too long should begin to gain some action.

Typical liberal answer. Lets play by there rules, bring them in and give them a fair trial. Obama is not going to let us mess with his Muslim brothers. We see what is happening in Gitmo. Let my brothers free the Great Barrack Hussein Obama says.

Well, I hate to be right but I predicted this in my post a while back-an American ship attacked and now an American hostage. This morning's news said the ship is now underway toward Kenya with ARMED

Sorry about that, why it posted I don't know so let me continue.  Armed sailors on board. Now there are guns on the ship. Why? Wasn't the ship safe enough before? I also heard one reason no guns are allowed is because of higher insurance rates(?)  What? The ship is worth millions as probably the cargo and then there is the lives of the crew. Another reason is because the crew would require "intense" training to defend themselves-hogwash. Just another inner-city concrete jungle talking head relating shooting a firearm with building a moon rocket. How many men were on this ship,25+? I'm sure at least five were comfortable enough with guns (ex-military,hunters) to defend the ship and five would have been all that was required. I know I must sound like a broken record but shoot up one group of pirates and the problem would be reduced by least 95%.  Kix

NPR just announced that the Captain tried to escape, but was recaptured.
We have ships in the area. Why, in the world, did we not have SEAL's deployed,
and have them take care of the situation, especially as the Captain was in the
water, away from his captors.
I just don't get it. Have we, the US, become totally emasculated by "world opinion".

we have no battleships if i remember .
But we do have subs and seals . they will have to leave the ship and go somewhere sooner or later . seems a nasty accident could be arranged for them with no clues left . and the transfer of funds be reversed . Or a decoy ship with a sub along for fun .
Nothing new here Thomas Jefferson sent the Marines to hunt and kill pirates when he was the president .

We have no battleships, but don't think for a minute that our US Navy surface ships don't have plenty of firepower.  Even the smallest ones could easily outgun a pirate speedboat.  And should.  It's past time to start arming merchant vessels again. These pirates could be considered terrorists, and we do have a war on terror going on, whether Obama likes to call it that or not.  During WWII, our merchant vessels were armed with a deck gun.  We've probably got plenty of recoilless rifles in our military inventory.  Put a couple of these on every merchant vessel and train the crews in their use.  Does anyone remember those beehive rounds fired out of the 106 mm's?  Those wouldn't be very pleasant from a pirate's point of view.

Now I read that the pirates are bring other hyjacked ship to the area to assist their friends in the lifeboat.  The pirates are bring ships loaded with the crews of other ships using them as shields.  Chinese, Phillipino, Russsian, and other nationalities.  This could escalate into a real mess soon if something is not done.

Sourdough:

A classic case of indescisiveness and weakness leading to escalation. The pirates are no dummies and they are doing what any intelligent person would do.  What did the Americans think the pirates would do? Morons!

This shocking display of American weakness is going to cost us a lot more than a sea captain in the long run.

The whole American role in this is like an old Monty Python skit in its design.

How embarrassing.  The french have done a better job of standing up against Somali pirates than we have.  French commandos rescued 3 of 4 French captives being held by pirates. Unfortunately a 4th hostage was killed during the rescue attempt.

We blew our chance last night when the US sea captain made a bold attempt to escape by bolting out of the cabin and jumping overboard around midnight.  One of the pirates dove after him and dragged him back  to their boat after shots were fired at him.  For some reason we were not in a position to capitalize on his attempted escape.  As soon as the Captain jumped off the boat it should have been ripped to pieces by our Navy's deck guns.  The condition of the Captain is unknown and the pirates are still demanding $20 million in ransom.

Not the first US flag ship taken by any pirates however. Are the present leaders EVER goiung to learn from history ? If I had been in charge, guns would have been trained upon that craft at all times..as soon as the capt jumped off the launch several guns would have made short work of the pirates. I would wager that the commander on the scene would like to have done it that way, but was prevented by "higher-ups".
Sure don't want to insult the Muslim brothers, do we !
Back when our leaders were men..and not Muslim men, they didn't put up with that junk:

Agreed,  that life boat should bean bathed in flood lights 24/7 with deck guns from the destroyer trained on it at all times. As soon as the US sea captain hit the water that boat should have been shredded.   >:(

"O" failed this test so far, but he can yet be partially redeemed. The news reports that some larger pirate ships are headed for the area in a "rescue attempt" for their evil brethren. "O" can boost his image if he gives any pirate ships that show, "the deep six"..let's see if he has any grapes... :P

Carter didn't give Iran weapons. I believe that was Reagan and Bush Sr. who pulled that stunt  ::) ::) ::)

The escape attempt would of been the perfect time to sink the boat though.

The news reports did say today the hostage was going to be killed if the US did not back off.
The FBI advised it would be best because they felt negotiations were going ok. They are talking with "Pirate Headquaters" on the mainland who are probably not too thrilled about the fact their people took a US ship. It's speculated the leaders could throw the 4 pirates under the bus ordering them to release the hostage.
It is also noted that the Pirates have a history of ending hostage situations peacefully (releasing the hostage unharmed).

Let's not play Monday Morning Quarterback from thousands of miles away with few details of what's really going on.

If giving weapons to an enemy was reason to blame a president for something then how come FDR , JFK and some others are talked about like they could walk on water ? Who's watch was it when we trained the japaneese to attack pearl harbour ?
