new to reloading for 45 acp
« on: April 09, 2009, 04:26:20 PM »
Ive been reloading for my rifles for a couple years now. Gonna get set up for my 45 acp. Im looking at the 4 die set from Lee & 200 grain hornady XTPs, Any tips, what powder would be a good one to start with. I ll be loading for a Ruger P90. This will be for plinking & home defence.
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

Unique powder. Good choice of dies and bullets. You might want to consider some 200 LSWCs for lower cost plinking.

There are many powders that will meet your requirements. Unique is a good choice!

Maybe you already have some powders that will work? The 45 is a good/ easy loading caliber.

The only powders I have on hand are 4064,,4350,, lilgun,, w748,, & some Rl7, I may have to swing thru Gander MTn. for some Unique, I think they had some Large Pistal primers as well.

I usually shoot a Missouri bullet company 230 grain LRN (softball) over 5.8 grains of unique.

OK, I assume you know none of those will work.  ;D  Crack open a loading manual and check whats recommended. Better yet, check all you have and compare. buy the most popular.

I agree 100% with the bullet choice. However, on the powder side I prefer using Clay's. Clay's looks similar to Unique in that it's a flake type powder, but I always seem to have a problem with Unique "sticking" and not dropping consistently in my progressive press time after time. Clay's however, will drop for me (I use 3.7gr. under the 230gr. softball) just as sure as "tock" will follow "tick". And, it will meter ever so much more consistently.

If you're using the Lee "Pro Auto Disk" or the "Perfect Powder Measure" you're good to go eith either one.

i've been reloading 45 acp for 25 years...tried bullseye, unique, and 231 in my 1911 and my favorite hands down is win231. I use a lee powder measure and the 231 works alot better in the measure for me,the 231 makes for very accurate ammo, and the biggest reason for me is the 231 burns a lot cleaner in my gun....after a shooting session with unique loads my gun is filthy, shooting the same amount with 231 my gun really doesn't need cleaning(i do it anyway).....have fun,45 acp is an easy cardtridge to get right, when you use the right stuff it's hard to come up with a load that's not accurate
