I have a 1997 Toyota Tacoma 6 cyl. 5 speed with 154K miles on it and it has never been in the shop for repairs.  Correction the only time it was in repairs was hitting a 175 lb deer at 65 mph.  It runs great.  The only color it has on most of the time is mud color.  The only time I ever got this truck stuck, I ended up crawling out the drivers window to get out.  I had Fords and Chevy before.  The Fords were in the shop more times getting fixed than I was in the mud holes.  The Chevy's faired better

Steve, a gun would of worked just fine on that deer. :)

deer versus truck
« Reply #31 on: June 18, 2004, 03:07:58 AM »
I would have been alot happier if I had shot it.  But sure did alot of damage to the truck.  But what was interesting the only damage to the deer was 2 spots about the size of a 50 cent piece that I had to throw out.  It was an 8-pointer with a 17 1/2 in. spread.  The rack was shaped like a basket ball.  I had the horns mounted.  It took less time to get the rack mounted than it did to get the truck fixed.

Got an old 72 jeep commando, 25k on rebuilt eng., just had the turbo 400 trannie rebuilt 2 mos. ago. It will wander thru stuff in 2 w/d where a lot of people need 4x4. It dont get washed cause I dont want it to fall apart. Gots a 51 studebaker with 3800 on a rebuilt eng. 4 door sucide doors, seafoam green (ugly) paint. Gots to fix the trannie beings it is froze in 2nd gear. Wife was born in the back seat, beings her dad put it into a snow bank on the way to the hosp. Its still set up for 6v, and has the old tube radio that weighs almost as much as I do.

I've been fortunate enough to own/drive several fine 4x4's.  My favorite was an 1988 toyota v-6 4x4 that I regrettibly sold last year.  That truck went places trucks weren't ment to go.  I currently own a 95 chevy Z71 ext. cab for all my hunting/fishing/playing.  I also drive a 2002 dodge ram 1500 4x4 club cab as my company vehicle/daily driver.  All of my 4x4's seemed to like dirt much more than pavement.  Most of them wore custom pinstripes thanks to the narrow trails where I hunt.

A 2000 Cherokee and a 1996 F250.  The F250 does most of the off-roading.  I have a 125 mile round trip commute, so I drive my old 1995 Escrt SW most days.  There's a noticeable difference in courtesy when I take the truck to work.

1994 S10-ZR2, 125,000 miles and still going. It tows the bass boat, hauls the canoe, and carries all the hunting gear where ever I want to go. It also does all the work around the yard that I nedd it to do.

79 Ford Bronco do they make another 4x4. :)  No IFS, chain drive T-cases or automatic hubs for me. Give me the real deal.
Got a 5.8 EFI engine and a A4OD waiting to replace the 460 and C6 the feed bill on that thing is killing my fun. I'll miss the power but it's gotta go.

Guess I should update...Got rid of my Chevy from page 1 over a year ago, no problems with it, it just wasn't enough truck for what I was doing with it.
Now I have a 01.5 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 with the Cummins and a whole list of performance upgrades..

Also got rid of the 89 cherokee and picked up a 95 Cherokee sport, pretty much stock right now, but will be getting lifted along with new gears and lockers........ :D

I drive a 96 Dodge Ram SLT 318 8' bed with limited slip and 4 wheel drive, 68k original since I bought it new in 95. my hunting buddy from Maine called yesterday that he was down and enroute to my house to visit, I told him I was looking a a great deal in the paper as we spoke, a 99 Dodge SLT 360 4x4 6' bed for $5,800.00. He called, we went to see it and it looked like it was on the showroom floor!!!, 102K but strong running. A single 40+ home inspector had it and just bought a new Toyota Tacoma TRD package and wanted to sell his truck before the end of the year!!! He uses the truck to drive all over southeastern Mass. on the highways to inspect homes for potential buyers. It has new Toyo tires, a great Flowmaster dual exhaust sytem, nice sound system, heavy duty 3/8 piston shocks, is tricked out with window vents, tail light covers, bed liner and had a tonneau which is gone. It looked like it had never been off road!!! We took it for a ride and right to my mechanic who threw it up on the lift, It needs one light bulb in the bed light and an oil change in about 250 miles, otherwise everything was great, the undercarriage does not even have any rust on it!!!. We tried the 4 wheel drive and its great and the tranny seems strong. We went back and drove away in it after paying the guy $5,200.00!! I may go back and buy his muzzleloader he had in his house, he wanted to use it for the last day of ML season here (today). So what do you think, a great, like new looking, strong running 1999 360 4x4 for $5,200.00, was it a deal???....<><....

Kelley Bue Book has it retailing as outfitted for $11,545 and private party value at $9,410..

Man Msp ret you sure can find the deals, beit a gun or a truck. I've been planning a new 4X4 for some time now. I wanted just a plain old f150. Things never go as planned though and I ended up inheriting my Dad's toyota tacoma 4x4. It has been babied and I'm far to practical to trade a paid for truck for some thing I just want. This will get me out on the beach for surf fishing and it's already taken one deer out of the woods for me.
PROUD REDNECK CONSERVATIVE

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

You have the best truck in the world there Markus, It was your Dad's and those Toyotas are bullet-proof!!! I personally like the size of the Tacoma, I sometimes feel my full size Ram is a bit to big for my needs, tough to get it through the woods without scratching it also. I had an older Toyota 4 wheel drive before this that was wonderful. My son has one now and it's great also. The only problem with Toyotas is they are expensive AND they hold their value!!! Not a bad thing if you already have one though!!!....<><....

Hooker, I know what you mean.  I have a 78 Bronco w/ 36" swampers, detroit locker in the rear, I love the power, never have a problem merging into traffic (I just love it when some punk kid slides up and gives you that look like "you're not getting in here", and then he realizes that I don't give a crap about sheet metal damage and imediatley gives me room :) ).  The older rigs just have class and a certain amount of intimidation about them, not to mention, they are tough as nails.  But that gas bill kills me.  However, it's still cheaper than a new truck payment.  I've been looking at getting a 96 Bronco with the mass-air EFI, E4OD auto + complete wiring harness, and do the swap, after I take the crank from my spare 400 and slip it into the 351w.  Well, that's enough, I can go on and on about all the things I have done, am going to do, and would like to do with that Bronco, but I'll save some of that for later.
