Polish mauser ...
« on: April 10, 2009, 11:39:20 AM »
I just picked up a Polish WZ98A in 30-06 with a Douglas #2 contour, timney trigger, and maple stock.  Bought it on the spot knowing nothing about it. Needs a little cosmetic work, the bore looked good and the price was right.

I shot it today, threw some 60 gr RL19/150 gr barnes loads today to test fire it - 3/4" at a hundred, so I think it's gonna be a shooter!

Anybody know anything about them - good or things to watch out for?

Thanks.

Hey - it's a custom 98 Mauser with a custom 30-06 barrel, custom trigger, a nice stock and it shoots to 3/4" at 100m.  What's to watch out for?  you're a lucky guy.

All of the Polish 98 Mausers were built on German tooling from the old Danzig Werkes - so the action is the gold standard for custom rifles.

Your "sporter" (WZ98A) was originally a Carbine (the rifles were the straight WZ98's).

But, lucky guy - you really ARE a "lucky guy", since, evidently, the Polish Reverse Firing (bullet impact towards the rear) was corrected during sporterizing.  ;)   ;D   ;D

As I remember the Polish Mausers were some of the best made.  Right up there with the VZ24's etc.   :-\  But what do I know...  :-[

Thanks for your help guys.  I found this one in a little rural gunshop while in the road here in Oregon.  I know a little about rifles but nothing about Mausers.  It needs some refinishing to look great but looked ok otherwise.  I got it for $200 which is another reason I was worried that I was missing something. I figured if I was missing something I could part it out and not lose too much on it.

Here are a couple pics, mostly of the stock.  Metal has a black paint-like finish that's chipped up some, and the crown is a little rough, looks like it bounced around behind the seat for a while.  Also, the receiver is stamped "F.B. RADOM 1938" with an eagle image ??

Totally. I've sworn to myself that I'm not going to buy yet another .30-06, but with a stock that pretty and for $200 I'd have snapped that thing up quicker than you could blink.

Heck its only a 30-06 you know you can't kill deer nowadays without using a magnum. I'll tell ya what I'll take it off of your hands for what ya paid for it.  ;D
