444 Marlin load
« on: April 10, 2009, 12:42:06 PM »
I realize every rifle is a bit different when it comes what ammo it will favor. But here, for whatever it's worth, is a handload I discovered that my Handi likes.  It’ll put 3 shots into 1” at 50yds; hot or cold barrel doesn’t seem to make a difference. 50.8gr of H335 behind a 300gr Hornady XTP bullet.

I’m also somewhat pleased with the groups I’m getting with 55.0gr of H335 behind a Speer 270gr Gold-Dot softpoint.  It's a good load, just not ready for prime time yet. Needs a bit more tinkering.

My Handi just seems to prefer heavier bullets than the factory loaded Remington 240gr stuff, which it spits all over the paper.

I use the 265 gr Hornady over 44.0 grs of IMR-4198, and the 300 gr XTR over 40.0 gr of H-4198.  Those are shot from a Marlin 444SS.
The older I get...The better I was.

My 444 H&R loves everything that's been shot thru it, 240gr XTP, 265gr Hornday and 355gr Beartooth handloads, plus Remington and both Hornady factory loads.  ;)

I've had good luck with IMR 3031 under the Hornady 265.  I'm gonna try some Ramshot TAC and E-Xterminator.  NEED MORE TIME!  DP

What is your load of 3031 with the 265 gr Hornady?  I have some 3031 and would like to try it.

I found one in an older Hornady book that starts at 40.8g of IMR 3031 and goes higher than I did. I stopped at 50.0g with good accuracy and it works in my Handi and my Marlin.  This printing is from 1973 and powder may have changed.  Check on the MarlinOwners site and do a search for 444 loads, they have some as well.  ALWAYS check and recheck any load data given to you by some one else.  I don't like to give out loads, but I had the manuel open and in front of me as I typed and have triple checked my typing of the charges.  Wouldn't even hurt to contact the Powder company and see what they recommend.  DP
