How do you ID a pre-64 Winchester Model 70?
« on: April 10, 2009, 12:57:42 PM »
Does anyone know the serial # cut-off for a "Pre-64" Model 70? Or, are there any other ways to know if you have one?

All post-64 Winchester Model 70's serial numbers start at 700,000, and go up from there, with the letter "G" prefix serial numbers starting in 1969.

If an M70's serial number is below 700,000, and has no prefix, ergo, it is a pre-64 of some era (pre-war/post war/etc).

If it's a pre 64,  on the bottom of your receiver there is a screw in front of the lever, this is the screw that holds the lever link pin in place.  On post 64's there is no screw there.  I think on post 64's the link pin that runs left to right through the receiver is a screw.

When browsing through used guns in racks I always look for the screw if I'm wondering about it being pre 64.

jimster, the OP refers to the Model 70 boltgun, and not the Model 94 levergun.

ahh- err - look at the action specifically the bolt. The bolt is completely different. If it doesn't look old it may be a new M70 - check serial number or barrel marking to see which company made it.
