Carter without a doubt

Dee I am almost afraid to ask but what is your issue with Licoln? Just curious.

kinslayer1965, with you living in Florida, I am shocked that you don't know. The uncivil war was not about slavery at all, but was instead about EXPORT TARIFFS of textiles to Europe, and STATES RIGHTS. The southern states prior to Lincoln was paying over 70% of ALL taxes, and was selling their cotton and other textiles to Europe. The industrialized North want the cotton BUT, did not want to pay what the going price was. The President before Lincoln put a 10% tariff on the exported cotton, but it was STILL BETTER, than what the North wanted to pay.
DOES THIS SOUND A LITTLE FAMILIAR? NOW THE "INDUSTRIALIZED NORTH" WANTS THE "SOUTH" TO HELP "BAILOUT" THE "INDUSTRIALIZED NORTH'S CAR COMPANIES", WHILE THE SOUTHERN "NON-NORTHERN-NON-UNION CAR MAKERS" ARE NOT NEEDING A BAILOUT, AND THE "SOUTHERN AUTO WORKERS" ARE MAKING A GOOD WAGE. ONCE AGAIN, THE "INDUSTRIALIZED NORTH" WANTS TO TELLS US WE ARE "WRONG", AND IT IS OUR FAULT THEY ARE GOING BROKE. DON'T THINK SO.
BACK TO THE LINCOLN THING. SORRY!

Lincoln stated that if elected he would DOUBLE the tariff to 20%, thereby FORCING the Southern States to sell to the Industrialized North at a cheaper price.
FLORDIA STATED, that if Lincoln won the election, that FLORIDA WOULD SECEDE. South Carolina just beat them to it. As things progressed Lincoln INVADED THE SOUTH, killed millions of Southerners, ordered the burning of entire cities, and left thousands  of Southerners homeless.
Had he not been assassinated he intended to DEPORT ALL BLACKS to Liberia. Think not on that last remark? Just do a search on Abraham Lincoln's Racist Remarks. His speeches were st-rune with racism. He was not the shiny penny everyone has distorted history to make him, and the war was not about slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation was more about trying to break up the Southern economy, as the North was getting it's butt kicked in the fighting.
Lincoln was a racist of the worst sort, and considered Mexicans MONGRELS. He was a BIGOTED ELETIST! HE ENDED STATES RIGHTS, and started the procedure of eroding them ever since. Most all our Presidents since have added to his legacy. He actually OUTDID Roosevelt, and Bush, but Bush definitely got the ball rolling faster in his last term.
This is the problem with PUBLIC SCHOOLS, and APATHETIC AMERICANS. We don't know our TRUE HISTORY, and are easily MIS-LEAD, and have been for decades. None of this is imaginary, and is documented and available to ANYONE WITH THE ENERGY TO LEARN THEIR TRUE HISTORY, instead of the distorted one they were taught.
MANY THINK THESE FACTS TO BE UNIMPORTANT, HOWEVER OUR HEREITAGE IS HOW WE GOT TO WHERE WE ARE TODAY. FORGET HISTORY, AND YOU ARE CONDEMED TO REPEAT IT! ANOTHER FACT.
You may all go to hell, I will go to Texas. Davy Crockett

Well sir, you may separate me from the TM7 post, as I have never heard his version before. I am relying on history alone, not conspiracy theory. No offense TM7.

Jimmy Carter - with out a doubt. I remember it well; a guy with good intentions but screwed it all up - over seas and at home. It took Reagen a few years to straighten up that mess ...Hmmm it feels like our present President is serving his second term. Also a one and done if the conservatives can muster anyone with a back to basics platform in 2012.

I don't see obama on the list. Any president that can get people all over the country spontaneously out to tea party protests is pretty amazing.

Left out George H Bush also.  Remember, "Read my lips"?  Also, George H signed some gun control legislation if I remember correctly.

Reagan Passed gun control legislation as Govenor of California as well as when he was president.  He bailed out Social Security which drastically increased payroll taxes for employees and employers. He taxed social security benifits for the first time, but only for the rich.  One year after his tax cut, he agreed to a $100 billion tax increase which was the largest since WWII, followed a year later by a gasoline tax increase.  Government grew exponentially under Reagan when he created the Dept for Veterans affairs and yet never cut any of the dept's that he made campaign promises to cut.  Reagan comprimised with the Soviets on Arms Control which was not real popular with conservatives of the day.

Of course it goes without saying, if you care about the environment at all, then Reagan certainly was not your friend either.

JimfromTN,

Read my intro to the poll.  I was limited to 5 choices.

Feel free to start another one.  Don't be too surprised at the results though.

How about this in your list about President Reagan:
Ronald Wilson Reagan,
40th President of the United States.
The man who won the war.

...Reagan also ended certain interest deductions,,,car loan interst for one if a I recall... put the cabosh on the auto industry for a while...then there was secret drug dealing and the Iran-Contra deal with neophyte William 'Rockafeller' Clinton and the famous Mena Ark airport...drugs for arms. (Ever read the book DOPE, INC?) He also started the long saga of anti labor government policy, culumnating  with W anti unionism/immigration/open border policy.   But don't confuse oddshooter with the details...the devil is in the details.... 8) ;)

...TM7

Yes & I remember the details, I paid less taxes under Reagan than under Mr. Peanut, nice try though.  ;D ;D ;D

I am not confused by facts or details. I accept any facts proven. or details confirmed !  I look at the legacy of Ronald Reagan and thank God he was the President(in total). Everything he did was not wonderful! When he deregulated oil  in 1981, my family was in the Marine petroleum transportation business.  The deregulation allowed the major oil companies to squeeze out the small independent oil refineries and producers. some of them, most of them went belly up. That was not good for us due to the fact that we were left with some accounts receivable that were worthless. We survived but it was a hard row to hoe!
But deregulation was a good thing, the government should not be in the oil business! so I voted for him the second time also! He may have made mistakes, hell, he may have even broken some laws, he did keep us safe and he did build the military back up to do so. He also was responsible for the fall of the soviet union, in that they ran their economy in the ground to try and keep up with his military spending. The Economy was good!

At this point "agent 7" I feel you do not like anyone or anything, maybe not even yourself! You never have a good word to say about any subject! nor president. I wonder who you would think was a good President. It must have been a dilemma for you to only pick one for this thread!  You may never find a president you like but I know there will never be the perfect one!

No sir, I am not odd, I believe you and your "anti" everything attitude makes you the odd man out!

When was the last time the man you voted for elected president. I can see it now " I dont vote for the lessor evil "

or Maybe he was in the last election!

It was me. ya got me ! I was behind the whole thing. Finally I can get this off of my chest. I told Reagan what to do for eight years. I not only voted for him i was responsible for our foreign policy the whole time. When Ronnie started loosing it what with the alzheimer's and all, I had to step in and run things behind the scenes. Then when "W" got elected I had to step in and plan the Iraq conflict when he and "colon" powel could not agree on, should we steal the oil, or just turn the country into a confused blood bath. cause "sadamn" had threatened Georges life and we texicans were not gonna put up with that!

Look pardner, I do NOT approve of everything these guys do. In fact I approve of very little they do. I wish the perfect president existed, but he would have to have 250 million policies to make everyone happy!
I try to see the big picture! if the president uses his power to protect the country, and he does not tax us into oblivion I overlook some crap! yep!

This shmuck we have now won by 1 percentage point, ONE. Had you and a few others not voted for someone who could not win(although I have no problem with Ron Paul) he just had no chance. News Flash! He did not have enough support nation wide to win.(You the all knowing, had to know that before the election) We at least would not have what we have now! Now I'll here all the bad news and conspiracy theories you have bagged about McCain. He was not my first, second, third, or fourth choice. but he was the one the primaries said was the only chance we had to defeat socialism! So who is the lodge dodge here! I suspect it ain't me!

The pole was "Who was the worst president in the last 45 years?".  There were more than 5 presidents so you can't limit it.

Out of the 12 years of Reagen/Bush, there were only 2 years in which we were not in a recession.  I believe it was 84-86.  What I remember was the closing of mental institutions around the country and the mentally ill being thrown into the streets to become homeless.  Reagan was a born again, wasn't he?  How christian it was to throw the helpless into the streets.  I remember hard working americans living in their cars with their families because they could not find work.  I remember when homelessness went from being a few town drunks to being a serious national issue.  I remember seeing signs saying "Will work for food" becomming very popular back in those days.  The recession we are experiencing today can't even compare to the Reagan/Bush era.  At least the current government is trying to keep people from being tossed into the streets rather than promoting the tossing into the streets like Reagan did.  I remember when 401k's became so popular because companies who provided pensions were firing employees 6 months before retirement so they would not have to pay.

By the way, derugulation is the reason the economy is in the condition it is in today.  You can't expect human beings to do whats best for everyone.  They are only going to do whats best for themselves and unless you put laws on the books, people are going to do what they want and if it hurts you and your family, so what.  Don't be upset because your retiement is worthless because someone figured out a way to legally screw the system and make a fortune.  At least you know that the government did not step in and stop them and you can say "Thank goodness for deregulation.  There is nothing worse than the government sticking its nose where it does not belong".

Jim From TN is right about a lot of things. I'll quibble with the 84-86 time span because the significance of the Reagan presidency is that it ended the recession started by Nixon and which climaxed spectacularly with Carter. Reagan's policies led to a 20 year period of relative peace and prosperity, and the history books recognize him for that great accomplishment. He really does deserve a lot of credit.

I do agree with the very important points about how people were screwed out of their pensions just as Jim From TN says, and there were other variations as well. The fact is that business has a long and sordid history of scandal in this country. Sometimes the government helps. Often it makes things worse. There is a good and valid place for government regulation, but for it to work it takes a populace that is willing to raise hell when the bureaucrats and politicians are failing us.

Re the poll limits to 5 choices:

I didn't see the "add option" button to add more than five options when I made the poll.  Had I seen that, I would have gladly included all the presidents in the subject timeframe.  Since I thought I was limited to five, I gave my rationale for omitting the three that I chose to omit.  JimFromTn's mileage obviously varies on that point.

JimFromTN, please take the initiative to create another poll, with all of the presidents for the timeframe in there.  We can go back even further in time if you'd like.  I just arbitrarily picked 45 because that's how old I am.

What would you prognosticate to be the results of that poll if you ran it?

Jim from TN. I think your giving the president to much credit or blame. Congress has alot to do with what laws get passed. Individual luck, good or bad, cannot be controled by the president. Sorry about somebody having to sleep in their car, but if their hard working like you say, they found a job. I heard alot of hard luck stories under every president we've had since the late '60's. gypsyman

Questor, I've had to say this repeatedly here(this site). There is no president now(we can attest to that today), in the past, nor in the future that was/is/will be perfect! Some just seem to go out of their way to make the government too big! In their zealousness to take care of the masses(who don't need or want it) they enlarge the government, whats more they enlarge the bureaucracy! Which makes taxes go up and makes more people enslaved to the government!

No president can be all things to everyone! I am not wealthy, I am retired, So I would like the government to be more attentive to my needs, but they wont, and if they do they will be putting a hardship on someone or some other group.

Mistakes have been made and some have suffered! Hell the depression lasted an extra ten years due to FDR's mistakes of pouring money into a hole. It would have lasted longer had the WAR not came along! And everyone loves FDR! at least democrats do!

I am very happy Ronald Reagan was president, despite my families losses, I only wish he was here today to be president!

Have you ever wondered why we pay most of our tax dollars to the federal government, instead of to state and local where we get most of our services? After all, fed is only about defense, diplomacy, and a few other things of value. Yet working stiffs like me are paying them a third of our wages. It's topsy turvy.

It is scary as hell, There was a poll that came out the other day, and there are a lot of people that think the federal government should do more for them, they are owed more like medical care and housing.
The poll also said only 53% of people(over 30) think that capitalism is better than socialism. Younger people think socialism is better.

Sadly we seem to moving that way! If lucky I wont live to see it. I fear for my children.

"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."
