Durned hogs!
« on: April 11, 2009, 04:38:11 PM »
I went to the lease friday and came back today.  We got there around an hour before dark and immediatly went to putting bait out at the feeders.  The first one we went to hogs had dug big holes around the three legs of the feeder effectivly lowerering it abot a foot and loosening up all the T-posts wired to each leg.  We put corn in the feeder after doing some squaring away of Tposts and wire, then poured some corn on the ground and poured soume soured corn juice on it.  Next feeder was laying on it's side, picked it up and set it where the legs are not in the holes the hogs dug in very hard ground, refilled the hog toy that was empty and repeated the pile of corn with soured corn juice poured on it.  Last I had a hog toy chained to a Tpost in a depression, as we are driving to it my hunting partner says "is that your hog toy?" and it was 150 yards away from where it's tpost is.  I planned on bringing this one home and I had it's replacement full of soured corn in the back of the truck so I just put the empty hog toy in the back of the truck.  I replaced the swivel on the chain and attached the hog toy to the tpost.  Sadly that night we saw no hogs but I'll bet tonight and tomorrow the hogs are having all kind of fun at my expense.

Well the hogs came back two days after we left.  This time they knocked the spinner box off one feeder so all 5 bags of corn ran out on the ground and then they dug a huge hole under that feeder.  I took the box home with me.  The feeder that was knocked over last time was still standing but the hogs had dug out the t-post holding one of the legs and actually shook the corn out of the feeder till it was empty, 5 bags! That must have taken some time  Of course both hog toys were empty with not a kernal of corn left. I got some nice pictures on my game cam of 4 large hogs which will now forever be called the A team.  The wheat the ranchers on adjacent properties planted for their stock was up and since the hogs had relieved our feeders of corn they had no use for hanging around on our lease.  We filled one feeder and made it more hog proof (yeah right) and both hog toys.  I should be out there tonight getting revenge but I can't make the 210 mile trip every 4 days and thats too bad.

Come to think of it, any of you hog hunters live near Ft. Worth Texas?  If you want to split the cost of corn and gas we'll hook up and kill some hogs.

Dang sure I would love to hunt pigs with you.  But 1,220 miles one way is a bit far and diesel and air fare just arn't getting any cheaper.  Thanks for the invite though.  I would have loved to split costs.

Hogs are determined and very strong creatures.  At one of our places the pig toy is chained with a ring to an artillery belaying pin that is 2" in diameter.  That steel pin was driven 2 feet into very hard ground.  Now the hogs have loosened that pin.

That's why my feeder's hanging from a big tree. Now experimenting with a hanging hog toy with a cowbell on it.They mess with it while someone's there and they'll hear the bell.Over 200 miles?Where are you driving to Ft.Worth from?

Revenge!  We drove out there saturday, filled the hog toys and poured some corn out in a couple of easy to sneak up on places near water.  Went back to the cabin, ate some barbecue, drank some coffee and took a break.  At 11pm we went out and in 20 minutes killed a 250 pound boar with the nicest set of teeth.  We gutted, skinned and quarted him, put him in a big ice chest and headed back.

I'm going back this thursday but probably will leave it alone for a while, maybe till september.  It's getting warm enough that taking care of the meat is an immediate problem.
