May have a problem...some opinions please
« on: April 12, 2009, 05:41:10 PM »
I got a .45 T/C Hawken in a trade recently, it has a brass tube scope mounted on it. Tonight I was tinkering around with it and took the scope mounts off the barrel, I noticed the screws for the rear mount seemed awful long so I got my calipers and depth mic out. The barrel wall thickness is .260, the depth of the two holes is .175, that leaves only .085 (about 5/64") from being drilled all the way through. That just dont seem like much to me and now Im wondering if its going to be safe to shoot. What do you think fellas? Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

I'd say, measure the depth of the sight and under-rib screw holes and see what they are and compare, may be same and no problem (hopefully).

Just happend to have a GM .54 in 15/16 stripped of sights and rail (prep for browning) handy, so I mesasured it for ya.
sight and rail hole depth =     .140
sidewall thickness @ groove= .190
              so that's only        .050
I'm not even gonna second guess Green Moutain, these are pro's that have been making barrels for a LONG time. I am confident that's with in the saftey range for pressure testing, otherwise they'd do something different.
Good question though, saftey is always a good thing too know and think about. I think the biggest deal is the small size of the hole and the screws fitting in snug to maintain the integrity of the barrel (aka: the hole is plugged). The big hole in the end, in your case .450 or better, is relieving the pressure fast enough so the small drilled/plugged holes don't have much to deal with. When ya think further, dovetail sights remove a large piece of the barrel. One I have here on an old cva barrel is .099 deep and .340 wide!
I guess I'd stay away from the all to common rookie move;;  "I always double the charge, so I get a good hit!" gadd's,, that drives me nut's,, even the "I gotta know the MAX load for this gun", stuff leaves me shaking my head >:( ::) ::) :P

Necchi, I think your right. I got to thinkin about it last night, much bigger holes are drilled through the barrel wall to install powder drums, and all Flintlocks are bored through for the touch hole. Guess I just got kinda over anxious about it. Thanks for the opinions on the matter and the time you took to do some measuring of your own barrel. I feel better about it now.

the screw fills the hole . i shot several matches and a ton of pratice with an XP-100 that the front sight screw hole was all the way thru. , no ill effect . The gunsmith replaced the gun but i used the old one until the replacement  came in . Guess its like a nose ring/stud they don't fly off either when you sneeze .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

One thing you need to keep in mind. The powder is not going off under the scope screws. The powder goes off and the ball or bullet is starting to move down the barrel long before the bullet gets to the screw holes. The pressure has already spiked. I don't think you have a thing to worry about.  Ron
