Cast in 336 3030
« on: April 13, 2009, 02:29:39 PM »
Hi fellas

Who is shooting cast and what is your whitetail medicine.  Father inlaw gave my grandson his turdy turdy 336w micro groove, I just worked up a light practice with unique and a Lyman 311041 and Lee 170 yet to be tested. He is five so I have a few years for load development. Thanks Boon

I tried lead in a 336 this year.  A 311291 lyman bullet, and several rifle powders with accurate arms 2520 being the most accurate.  My problem was once I felt I had the velocity high eneogh to be effective for whitetails the recoil was strong as a lighter jacketed bullet.   Running out of time I used sierra 125 grain jacketed hp bullets in it.  My son, 8  shot the 125 grainers and they were plenty for his frame size but he could take the recoil and shoot without flenching.  Slow season this year and we never fired the rifle afield so as to there game killing power I can not swear.  But they went thru two one gallon steel tin paint buckets filled with water and entered a third with lots of expansion.  My guess is they would perform great in deer as long as the shot was limited to heart lung not shoulder shot.  The reduced pistol powder lead loads would be fine to break your son in on shooting the gun and the recoil will be light as I am sure you already know.  I was just never able to get  the light pistol powder loads to group very well.    Best of luck shooting with your son.  SN

I am using Reloader 7 with cast bullets from 170 to 180 in my 336.
When I get upto 22-24 grains with a 180, I get good accuracy but the recoil
is about the same as a 170 jacketed bullet.
If you are looking for a light recoil hunting load, try the jacketed Sierra 125 HP or
the Speer 130 FN. Both are proven deer killers.

I use the Lyman 311041 and lee 170 fp bullets in my Marlin.  I size them to .312 inch so as to work in my micro groove barrel.  My hunting load is 31 gr of H335 which give me around 2000 fps with water quenched wheel weight metal.  They kill deer as good as does jacketed bullets do but they are not light kicking loads.

The Marlin I had wouldn't work with the bullets cast from my 311291 mold as the nose section of the bullet was of too large a diameter and the rifling would engrave the nose section of the bullet.  If I tried to unload the chambered round it would often unload it's bullet and powder.  The mold works fine in my 30-06.

8.5 Unique, give or take .5 for accuracy in your rifle and you won't be able to cast and load fast enough to keep the boy in ammo!  Light loads of Bullseye are good too - haven't used it awhile so I don't recall the charge weight. The Unique load seems to shoot in every .30-30 I've tried it in and is excellent for a starting shooter, maybe starting with the no recoil, no noise load using Bullseye first couple times out. I wouldn't waste the gas check until your young shooter is better than 2" at 50 yds. Moving up in velocity 14.5 IMR4227 shoots well in most. My deer load is 311290 from 50/50 lead/WW alloy(long obsolete and not 291 but the base is like 291 and 041 with a longer heavier nose) and H335 loaded to 1850 FPS. RCBS 30-180FN will do the same thing. Never found a bullet, no excessive meat loss, neck shots result in deer that drop where hit. I had an extra Marlin stock cut to 11 3/4 with a decelerator pad and slimmed down that has started a bunch of kids. Sent it out to a friend who's still using it. Just like us, stuff has to fit to shoot well and comfortably.  My boys are grown and all know alot more than me  :) I miss shooting with the young ones. Posted a pic below-group on left is 8.5 Unique, Saeco 316 no gas check, on right is 311291 with nose bumped flat. Typical 50 yd groups with no fuss loads from one of my microgroove 336's. My older pre-microgroove shoots no better but is less critical on being sized to .312. Good luck!

Thank Guys
That is just the things I like to hear. I have some 311041"s and some lee170"s loaded up over 10, 10.5 and 11 grains of Unique to head to the club this week to check out. Some good folks donated some bullets to try before I buy molds. I swapped one fella for bullets My Alladin"s 200 for some Lees. If it is nice I will load up the chony and check the speed. Thats some nice shooting Antie and I really enjoy taking the kids shooting. My youngest daughter 20 loves handgun shooting at 16 I bought a 22/45 for her to shoot but at the range she took my 1911 and all I did was speed load mags for her. You know who is going to inherit my hand guns lol. My oldest is more a AR 15 type girl and they both know how to shoot very well.  Boon

Ah the fun working up a load, something I truelly enjoy.
