credit card games
« on: April 14, 2009, 03:21:07 AM »
It appears that negotiating credit card rates has taken up where negotiating vehicle purchases has left off. I have or have had two general credit cards. One was with BOA that I had for years but I closed after several attempts from the company to add small charges to my monthly statements which they always removed after I called them on it. They claimed it was errors on their part after I brought it to their attention.
During this last year I had a something like a 19.9% rate on my Citibank card. I never carry a balance forward so it really does not make a difference to me but still ticks me off. I contacted them and got the rate down to 11.9. After a few months they again raised it to 19.9. I called a week ago and requested a rate below 10% which they said was impossible due to their financial problems. I said too bad and that I would be closing the account soon after being a customer for 22 years.
Yesterday I received a confirmation letter for the 11.9 rate but I had a question so I called again. The rep cleared up my question and then asked if I was interested in a promotion that would reduce my rate if I transferred other card balances to this card. I told the rep that I did not have any other cards and was getting ready to close this card due to poor rates as soon as I opened another card. The rep then said that they could give me a 3.9 for at least nine months if I would continue with the card. I HATE games like this but it appears that they all do it. Thanks for letting me vent.

The banks aren't the only game players. Due to my location I need satellite TV if I want any at all. Just recently Ma Bell got some competition out here which offered generally the same service at a lower price. I called Bell to put in a cancellation order when their Rep asked me if I was thinking of changing providers or just moving. I told him that they have gotten pricey over the years( they have) and I was looking at the competition he asked me if I would stay with Bell if he made me happy. I asked him just how "happy" he would make me. His reply: "30 percent off for the next 12 month".
 He made me happy ;D.

I don't run a balance either, but I have noticed that the company I pay my bill to, FIA Card Services, will have a payment due date, of say, the 17th of the month for almost all months of the year, and then will slip one in due on the 11th. If you miss it, they charge $50 or so. Pretty sneaky.

sorry to hear that sneaky stuff they pull. Seems like Canada is a bit more stringent in bank oversight as far as I know that kind of stuff doesn't fly here.

call it what you like but having a credit card is buying credit plain and simple . And as a buyer you have to be certian of what you buy. Its a shame that you can't trust business to be honest .

A few years ago, a friend of mine had his 'puter service's thru AOL. He noticed that he had been billed the first of the month, and again on the 18 or 19. When he called AOL, they told him that it was a short billing month. When he got his next month's statement, they had billed him again on the 10. Basically, 3 month's billing in 2 month's. When he called them on it, he got a run around, then a supervisor ''gave him'' a month of service. When he got his next statement, it was on there again. So he cancelled the credit card, and ran his service with AOL out, to where they had contacted him, and said if he didn't renue, they were going to discontinue his service. He figured out he was within a couple days of what he had payed for. So he told them ok.
My wife had an instance where she sent in her credit card payment 5 days before it was due. It does not take 5 days to get from Ohio to Nebraska. Her next statement had a late charge on it. She had sent in what she owed, so the balance should have been zero. Instead, it had a $20 late fee on it. When she finally got thru to a supervisor, she was told that they couldn't process all the mail that had come in, and it was a holiday weekend, so some of the payments had set on desks or baskets all weekend, and hers was one of them. She got the late charge dismissed.
Right now, I'm fighting a $79 charge on my credit card from Norton Anti-Virus,Symatec. They charged me for an annual update. Problem is, the 'puter I have now, has a different virus program. My old 'puter from 2 years ago, had the Norton. This ought to be fun!! gypsyman

I too had a card through FIA and had a couple times when they had made a mistake.
It took a while but they corrected the problem.
There has been other issues also.
I will not cancel them as that looks bad on your credit report but as they come due I will not renew.
I now have a card from my home bank.
same here.
I always pay in full so the instrest rate really doesn't affect me.
