I have a Ruger OMBH in 4 5/8 bbl in blue with a brass frame.   I got it offa auction arms for less than $300 including shipping.

I did a cheapo trigger job {unhooked one of the springs} and it is a fine shooter. Packs well and can be loaded up or down with trailboss powder to suit me.

There is a NMBH with the small frame in .44 Special that one of the major gun dealers is selling. Ipseys?   That would be a fine addition to any collection of Rugers.  Lipsey's?

First off, you should ask your son just what he has in mind when he said he wanted a "Cowboy" gun.  To most people, that is simply a Single Action revolver.

When I think of a "Cowboy" gun, I see in my mind Roy and Hoppy, Mat Dillon and Doc Hollidy and the guns they carried.

Rugers are the workhorse of single action revolvers, built like a tank and will give years of service, but I never ever seen Doc cary a revolver with adjustable sights, or Gean or Roy, either.

When I think of a "Cowboy" gun, it's a Single Action revolver with fixed sights in 45 colt caliber. That's the picture I see in my mind and you should get it from your son just  exactly what he's thinking of before buying one.

The Ruger Blackhawk is a great cary and hunting gun, but it ain't no "Cowboy" gun with them big sights setting up there in the way and spoling the clean lines of a great SA. ;D ;D ;D

I'd opted for a .45 Colt over the very loud .357 magnums any day. Plus the added benifit of a larger bullet diameter, to boot. Just something about the report of the .357s that hurt my ears, for a long time after shooting them.

The report of tiny bullets is always pretty sharp; .223's and .357 are about the worst, IMHO. (I left out the .30 carbine because there are so few around that they're irrelevant)

my two cents...the 45 LC NMBH with 4 5/8" barrel is the lightest of the Blackhawks due to the amount of steel removed from the cylinder and bore to make it a 45 Colt...makes for a good packin SA....mine has bisley grip frame, hammer, and trigger

Travis, good point. I never did like aluminum in handguns.

My Blackhawk has it, and it feels and looks trashy.

My Blackhawk has it, and it feels and looks trashy.

While my super blackhawk has a steel grip frame it also has the cheapo ejector housing.
I heard that Ruger used the aluminum ejector housing to keep the recoil from stripping out the barrel stud screw with heavy recoiling guns and a heavier steel housing.
I don't really buy into that seeing as other companies use steel without any problems. ::)
More of a cost cutter for Ruger  IMO
