Time for me to vent
« on: April 16, 2009, 07:23:38 AM »
I have a variety of calibers that I shoot consistenly, but everytime I go anywhere locally(or on the net) the ammo shelves are completely empty.  I am getting real sick of this "scare buying" from obama taking the guns away.  Yes, I like to have a few hundred rounds on hand for when I head to the range, and would like to replinish them afterwards.  But...10,000...5,000 factory rounds on hand.  Seriously what is the need for that many rounds.  I can understand if you load your own, because that is your load, but that many factory rounds... IMO,If it really ever does hit the fan, you might have a need for a few hundred rounds max, but beyond that the only purpose that this scare buying/hoarding is serving is to drive the ammo prices through the roof...

Thanks for the time GBO.

well others just do not see it that way.

i am a good judge of what and how many of anything I need. If you do not want to load or have that many thats your business. whatever I want is my business.

Yes some people are loading up on ammo, but many are unable to find any to load up with.  I already had a good supply on hand for everything I shoot.  I only bought some more .223 ammo, but only six boxes.  That's only about, 7 to 8 months supply for me.

While I am hearing people complain about the hording, I'm not seeing it that way.  There has to be ammo coming in for it to be hoarded.  We are not seeing that much come in here in Fairbanks.  The stores are just not ordering it.  I went to Fred Myers looking for 25-06 ammo, (Got my first 25-06 for Christmas)  They only had two boxes, and not the weight I was looking for.  That was in January.  They have not had a shipment since.

I suspect that with all the restrictions placed on the shipments they are just not interested in paying the extra.

A couple of FFL holders here are getting big orders up and shipping 400 lbs (the limit per shipment) at a time to Fairbanks.  One is ordering strictly powder.  I'm taking 10 lbs of that.  Powder is just as scarce as ammo.

I reload for three competative shooters.  Rifle, Pistol, and Shotgun, we go through some powder, and that ten pounds won't last long.

I think the new restrictions on shipping may have a bit to do with the shortages we are seeing.  A shipment going on a truck has to be the last pallet on and the first pallet off.  That means ammo can not be shipped on multi shipment loads, unless the ammo drop is the first drop.  If the location for the ammo is the third or forth drop the ammo does not get on the truck.  Shipments coming to Alaska are limited to 400 lbs.  The shipment has to be broken into 4 increments not to exceed 100 lbs each.  These four increments must be placed on the four corners of the barge/ship in an outside location.  The shipping companies charge extra for the additional handling running the shipping cost up.  Therefore the stores are reluctant to order ammo, powder, or primers.  These new restrictions are reported to be for safety reasons, they are actually there to make it harder to ship ammo.  Eventually it will be so restrictive no store will want to handle it.  Therefore our supply of ammo will be cut off.  No ammo guns are worthless.

Gun control is unpopuler, so ammo control is quitely being put in place by regulation, congress is not involved so we can not do anything about it at the ballot box..

Have to agree with sourdough,it's the ammo their after, having 100 or so rounds is fine but slowly more and more laws will make it so hard to get any you can forget about it.Have any state make it's own laws on ammo, make it so costly to ship it that dealers just give up.

OK, Talked to a friend, who just happens to be the manager of Sportsman's Warehouse here in Fairbanks.  First off Scott told me he has a 100 lb shipping limit on what he can ship to Fairbanks.  Scott also told me that when he had his ammo and powder shipment come in last Monday, one guy came in and bought the entire shipment.

Now I'm wondering if that was a legitimate buy, for personal use.  Or if we are going to see that ammo and powder at the gun show next weekend with a 100% or 200% markup.

We also have had a local gunsmith talking about what is going on with AR-15 clones.  Back just before the election, some people with foresight, bought a lot of AR-15 type receivers.  They have since taken parts and built up complete rifles.  The problems are that they have used mismatching parts.  The buyers who buy these guns are having to take them to gunsmiths to find out what is wrong with their guns, and why they don't shoot.  In most cases the guns have to be totally rebuilt, using only a few of the parts supplied with the gun.

This gun show is going to be interesting.

Sourdough.  I have built quite a few ARs using parts from several diffrent sources, I have never had a problem with a gun I built.  I buy mil-spec parts, they come from every parts maker imagible, but the key is, they are mil-spec parts, often the same parts supplied to our boys in service and used in their combat weapons.  There are many aftermarket parts out there, but if one sticks with a company that supplies the military he will normally get good parts.

rockbilly:  That's true, but from what the gunsmith I talked to said these guys are not sticking with Mil Spec parts.  They are getting the cheapest parts they can find.  And they are not working.

I met up with some family to take our kids to the range for some plinking.  Could not find ammo anywhere except at the range for a premium price.  Needless to say our range session was rather short.  When I got home, I started searching around and of course everyone is sold out.  I understand people wanting to stock up - no problem.  My beef is with the ammo manufacturers.  Why don't they ramp up production?  We have a couple of wars going and John Q. Public is more than willing to buy.  I am no stranger to the laws of supply and demand, but like with most things the law of diminishing returns will begin to kick in.  In other words, people are simply going to quit buying boxes of 20 rounds for $30 - $40 a piece.  22 lr may be the caliber of choice for everyone in the future if we keep this up.  Reloading your own stuff is almost imposible because of the shortages.

I just wish the ammo manufacturers quit pandering to politicians and started supporting their customers instead.   >:(
