My New 44 Spl. "Handy" rifle creation...
« on: April 16, 2009, 06:14:26 PM »
My New 44 Spl. "Handy" rifle creation is not a H&R or NEF, but it is very Handy indeed!
It was built from a $25 Savage 94 12ga single shot which had been chopped to 20" barrel, had a wood stock and the old plastic forend.
If anyone wants to see it just let me know the right place to post the pics and i'll be more than happy to do so. ;)
Ok, here is a pic of the Savage 94 in 44 special.

Do bees buzz??? 'Course we want to see them! I've done a few stubs over the years as well - alot of fun without having a bunch of money tied up in the project. What did you use for a barrel blank? Here's a link about posting pictures here. You need an account somewhere. I use photobucket.com  It's free and end easy to use.

Just how in the heck does a .44 Special fit in a 12 gauge?

I guess pictures would explain better but I can't get to the photo sites from work computer.

By fitting a 44spl barrel inside a 12ga barrel, like this(pic is of a 357 done earlier).

44 in a rifle... Nice job, 44 has always had a reputation of being accurate.
so how is the barrel held in the 12ga barrel? looking at the extractor i guess that would only work for rimmed rounds?

Did you cut the 12g barrel down to a stub, or leave it full length like a bull barrel?

Just my $0.02, but it looks like the shotgun chamber and the rear end of the barrel blank were bored/turned to mate together, then soldered tight.
It's the tried/true "monoblock" type construction used elsewhere for many years.
The outside of the donor shotgun barrel looks like it was left full size to about the axle of the hinge pin, then pleasingly tapered down to meet the barrel diameter there.

Other than my wanting to make the forend wood shorter, more proportional to the barrel length - I LIKE IT  ! ! !

You nailed it right on the head!
The only thing you had wrong was when you said forend "wood", it is actually the old hollow Savage Tennite(plastic), and the butt stock was wood, had they matched, one way or the other I doubt I would have camoed it.Then again that's the fun with these conversions, making something cool out of something cheap!
Great call!!

After I silver soldered and pinned(set screws)the 44 barrel in the 12ga barrel I carefully cut away the 12ga barrel.

Yes, I think this ejector would only work with rimmed cartridges.

FWIW - Some extractor/ejectors can be made to work with rimless cases.

Frank DeHaas diagrammed & described the method in at least one of his books.

The upper face of the ejector rod is filed, so as to allow the tip if the ejector to rise up into the chamber area about .020" (IIRC), then the leading edge filed in a chamfer to slide over the rim, and the trailing egde filed into a squared face for extraction.
A spring/plunger needs to be added to the lower face of the rod to allow the in/out travel.
