Well good morning everyone, but I don't know how good today is gonna be.  Seems I came down with a bad viral or flu infection and well I have been up since about 01:30 again.  On a side note, its still a good day cuz we're here in Montana.

You all have a great day.  I had a wonderful past couple of days practicing my group therapy with my bow  ;D which almost cost me some grouping my arrows the way I did, as these aint cheap arrow shafts.

Take care of yourself and that is one fine group. 35 degrees and cloudy here today.I am goint to get to the range this weekend, havetwo rifles to dial in.      Doug

Good Morning All : ;D

Mighty fine grouping Montanan ...  Was visiting with a cousin @ grocery store . His son is hunting gophers @ the ball diamond complex in town . Says 20 yards is about the maximum  distance he can consistently hit a gopher .

Clear skies , very light breeze , 40+ degrees a day some Gophers will die !!!!!!!

Oh , thats right , I got machinery to get ready  :-\
ah ,well perhaps a quick check close to the house will do the fix for the day   ::)

It seems some folk on the lever action forum think it would be wrong for me to drill a 1950 336a for a scope. I asked.  ???   So I have a dilemna.  My girlfriends oldest son wants to hunt with the rifle and that is the reason why it was handed down in the first place.  The young man, Austin is just finishing his Hunters Ed course and is realy looking forward to his first hunt.  I hope to get Antelope tags for all three of us hunters in this house so we can get some hunting before general rifle for elk and deer.  Austin says he would like to have a scope and I, personally, would feel more confident if he is using a scope for his first shot at antelope hunting.  A 30-30 isnt what many people consider an ideal antelope cartridge, but it will do the job and a scope will help.  The uncle who passed the rifle down commented on this very subject.  I am told that he said " I'd rather he put a scope on it and use it than leaving it stashed away in some storage or closet."  I'm more of a utilitarian myself, not into collecting stuff without immediate purpose.  I reckon that the scope will go on, but I still feel a little sad about drilling it.

It's another fabulous Big Sky Country day here this morning, clear blue skies, warm 39 degrees.  Not hardly a breath of wind.

After lunch I am headed to Southpaw's for some hobby lobby work...It's actually a counseling session...he is having a difficult time with transitioning from gentleman farmer to RETIRED gentlemen farmer...I'l be gentle with him.

Mt_Sourdough.  The Marlin 336A is a good utilitarion hunting rifle. It does have some limited collectibility, but very limited.  It is not and probably never will be a high value rifle.  I am the type of person who doesn't like to alter old rifles from their original configuration.  I would be inclined to leave the rifle alone.  But I see no reason to not drill and tap this rifle.   Do it and get the kid hunting. 

The 30-30 is not a great hunting round for the wide open spaces.  But used with in its effective ranges it will be just fine.  Using  Montanan's archery sneak and peek stalking techniques to get close to undisturbed game and limit shots to 100 yards our less the 30-30 will work just fine.  Be sure he has a sharp knife and make sure he does the field dressing  from the very first animal and you will make him a lifetime hunter.  Good luck.

This is my feeling.  But unlike DD, I still wouldn't drill & tap.  Use the iron sights or mount a receiver sight.
