Ok. Here we go again. I am back to work. I need a Groundhog rifle in a bad way. You know the old saying you don't know what you got till it's gone. Well that is about the way I feel. You guys know about my tack driving Remington 700 SPS Varmint 243 I had to sell when times were tough. Well this time around I have really been considering a the same rifle in the 22-250 and I figured I would pick up a 308 in the same before deer season. Well the more I think about it I might just go back to the 243 SPS Varmint. The reason being I sure as hell don't have any extra cash and at this point I need a rifle that could be a deer rifle if things turn south with my work. In a perfect world I would hit the lotery and could own as many rifles as I like. Here in the real world my wife feels like I need a gun like a hole in my head. No pun intended!!!!!!!!! :o I will get by, by buying one with the wife. If I buy 2 at this stage we are going to butt heads. I don't really blame her either. The good thing is work is really picking up. The guy I am working for got 4 calls for work yesterday and I got a call myself from an add I ran. So what do you think? Dale

Dale I understand your desire to pick up more rifles in cals that you can actually use.
But I also understand what it's like to "live within my mean" when things really get thin. Sounds like you had it right the first time with your 243.  It can handle deer well, and is destructive on Varmints.
My friend has a Rem SPS Var. 243 and took a groundhog at 410 yards today.... I was there and ranged it 5 times to be sure. They are shooters my friend.
At least my 2cents....

I'll be the odd man out and suggest you get it in .308 and you're covered from groundhogs to deer/bear/whatever.

I don't know what you are really asking, but the 243win is okay for deer if loaded with a heavy for caliber hollow point bullet and is a real zinger for small varmints using 58 grain V-Max bullets.  I helped my S-I-L with a varmint load using these bullets and H4895 and they were very accurate.

And I am a huge fan. A good 308 Rem will serve you very well in many areas. My XR-100, 308 has.
I'm just saying a 243 out of a 26" barrel can really do some damage.  I believe it is over looked by many as an all around effective cartridge..it may not "ring" a gong as loud as a .30cal but it's one of the most accurate factory loads there out, with a treasure of history and loading info you could want..... ;D just like the 308 but a little bro. as I consider it.
 I personally believe it complements a 308 very well in anyones safe.

You do have a point. I don't eat the Groundhogs anyways. It is not like I am trying to save any meat. Dale

From one Aaron to another, I'll be the 1st person to look for reasons/excuses to throw a few rifles in a few different calibers into the safe :) I do it all the time and it's how I justify the purchases  :D

I was trying to put myself into Dales shoes and not having extra cash as he mentioned. If I could only get one rifle, and of those 2 calibers he mentioned... well you know my answer. That way I could hunt the small critters up to the bigger ones. But what I hunt is different from what Dale may hunt. My year wouldn't be good one if I didn't go Bear hunting in PA so obviously for me, the .308 loaded with some 165gr Sciroccos or Accubonds is hands down my favorite caliber. And if you haven't shot a chuck with a 168gr Amax or HP..oh boy!

Ammo price shouldn't be a concern as they are all ridiculous but I assume .243 might be a tad easier to find than .308 right now(I could be way off in that assumption).

We can give opinion after opinion but it's Dale who has to get the cash together and go fill out the papers. If I did woodchuck and deer a lot and was very comfortable with the .243 as he is, I'd probably go with it again. Infact I want another SPS varmint in the coming months(I'll pop another HS stock on it but OD Green this time) and Yes it will be a .243  8)

I sure wished Remington would come out with a 260 in the SPS Varmint. I would jump on that in a minute and would cover me well from Groundhogs to Deer. I also have kicked the 7MM-08 around. That would be another good multi purpose rifle and yes the do make it in a SPS Varmint. They just don't list it in their catalog. Dale

243 or 7-08, well that would depend on how far away you shoot the Deer in regards to retained energy & if you would hunt anything bigger than a Deer.

I remember your posts on the .243 , sounds like it was the perfect rifle for you. Going with the .243 again you will know exactly what you are getting. Yeah , too bad the 7mm-08 is not available. For pure varminting the .22-250 would be a great choice.

Well I'm just happy that on this thread everyone is allowing Dale to have another rifle. He wasn't so lucky on some of the other threads. :D

you don't eat ground hog ? why not ? Clean the little fellow out and skin it , trim all the loose skin around the stomach opening fill with whole yellow corn and bake until done serve right out the oven with sweet taters , tea and what ever else suits you .

Yea I am really leaning towards another SPS 243 Varmint. I even stopped at Gander Mountain on the way home from work,to see what they had. I fondeled several nice Remingtons today. ;There was on that was a 204 with a stainless fluted barrel.Very nice rifle. Dale
