Which bullet for a 2 3/4" barrel 500 S&W
« on: April 17, 2009, 11:04:19 PM »
Veral,

Just got a 500 S&W with a 2 3/4" barrel. I'm looking for a lightweight .501" bullet that I can use mainly for plinking and maybe light game. I will be mainly using the 500 JRH brass and 500 Special brass in this gun. The 500 JRH brass is like a 500 S&W brass, but 1.4" long. The 500 Special is 1.275" long. So this means there will be a long jump for the bullet through the cylinder, because of the long cylinder and short brass. Sort of like shooting a 38 Special in a 357 Maximum. What design and weight bullet would you suggest? You think this set up can still shoot accurately even though there is a long jump in the cylinder? A friend told me all the Weatherby chambers have a long throat, but not sure if I can compare it to revolvers?

Thanks,

Dennis

I answered you in a personal email last week, but there will probably be others interested in the answers for such a problem.

For revolvers with very long cylinder throats, always use gas checked bullets, and let me know about this issue when ordering a mold, as I'll design the bullet so it will grab the rifing harder after it's long travel.

As a rule, the slowest burning powder that will give consistent velocities, at low velocities, will give the lowest velocity gain in the cylinder, which means lowest impact speed with the rifling.  With a short barrel though, slower powders which are barely burning clean, and perhaps not even burning clean due to the low pressures, will give a lot higher muzzle flash and bang than would a fast burning powder loaded to the same low velocity.  Speaking here of speeds around 800 to 900 fps.

"design the bullet so it will grab the rifing harder"? Veral, you mean a longer nose?

As far as slow powders, powders like 296/H110? Are you familiar with Winchester 680? Got some, and wondering if its in the same class?

Thanks,

Dennis

As my memory serves me, it seems that it is a bit faster, and if so would probably be better so far as the report, at least, if it doesn't degrade accuracy compared to the softer takeoff of a slower powder.  Try both, or any powder you have, and use what you like best.  My recommendation on this gun is definately not from experiance with the particular gun!  I've never even seen one!  My experiance with long jumps in revolvers is from using special brass,     loaded HOT,        in 38 and 44 calibers.   The mechanics are the same.
