replacement recoil spring question
« on: April 18, 2009, 06:20:27 PM »
I have a Dan Wesson Bobtail Commander in 10mm that needs a new recoil spring. I don't know if I did it while cleaning or shooting, but the original spring developed a slight bend to it. I noticed it when clearing the pistol after some range time. The slide came back about 75%, and then I could feel a slight resistance as the spring caught on the guide rod, then slipped over. When I got home I stripped the gun and noticed a very slight bend to the spring. While I'm no 1911 expert, I assumed that this was the culprit.

I can't find the specs on the spring weight, and CZ isn't open to ask at the moment. I was thinking that either an 18 or 20# Wolf replacement would do the trick, but I thought I'd get a few other opinions. I thought that 18# was pretty standard for a 45, but I don't know about the 10mm. So what do you all think?

yorketransport:  16-18# recoil springs are the norm for a 1911 in 45 acp.  I believe the 10mm in a short package would take at least a 20.  I would access the Wolffe Springs (sp?) in Ardmore, PA and see what their site offers for factory replacement springs for that model and caliber.  HTH.

commanders usually come with at least a 20 lb spring in 45acp.  I would think the same gun in 10mm would need a even heavier one. Dont you still have your owners manual. If not email dan wesson and ask what they run in it from the factory.

There was no mention in the owner's manual and I'll have to wait until Monday to reach anyone at either Wolff or CZ/Dan Wesson. I already sent an email to both Wolff and CZ, so I'll just wait for a response. Thanks.

I did get it fixed. I just ordered the Wolff Power spring pack. I ended up using a 26# spring, and now it works better than it did from the factory. No more flinging brass 35'. Thanks for the help guys.

York,

I have a Colt Delta Elite, that uses a Wolf 28Lb recoil spring in place of the Colt double spring setup. I know its a different gun than yours, but all 10MM's seem to need a heavier spring to keep the slide from battering the frame.
I think your choice of 26LB will work satisfactorily for you.
Enjoy your 10MM..........I really like mine, and use it alot, for carry, target and hunting.
