Polyeaurathane over alcohol stained stock?
«

As we speak, I'm stripping the paint off the topper 410. I'm gonna use Fiebings leather dye to stain the stock[mahogany/dk. brown mix]. My question is, anything wrong with spraying the stock with 5-6 coats of exterior poly to water/weather proof the stock? Will it turn milky or yellow?

Maybe I should ask, polyurethane, laquer or an oil like tung oil to finish the stock. Any thoughts?

I use boiled linseed oil for refinishing stocks.
After staining the stock and letting it dry I do 2 or 3 oil scrub coats with 0000 steel wool.
The BLO should be thinned before scrubbing.
Makes for a very nice finish and is easy to do.

I've used Fiebings leather dye to do a couple of stocks and (like you) mixed colors to get just the right tint I wanted, works good, especially on "pallet wood" type stocks as it seems to penetrate well.
Finished mine with Tru-Oil and they turned out good. I just prefer a hand rubbed oil finish, but I don't see why the polyurethane wouldn't work.

I think I would go with what the maker of the poly says...read the instructions or go online to the poly site for the particulars...some poly products will work with some dies and not with others and some may yellow...Wood is wood...no different than furniture...but it is better to be safe than sorry.
Luck on your project.

Well, the fiebings worked very well. I'm on my 4th coat of poly. Spray it on wait 2 hrs., lightly hit it with 0000 steel wool, wipe with tac cloth, then hang up for another spray coat. So far so good. Will let you know, when all done.

Maddog go slow with the spray on even though it feels dry and it lets you steel wool it in between coats after 2hr I would let it sit now and then 24hrs to really harden before I get to far along. Kurt

Spray on poly...
To each his own but the extra time and effort it takes to do a nice oil finish is well worth it.
Good luck with it.
