One of the books that I have says that this is a good way to remove the plating from the parts. Apparently the plating reacts with the soil and the canines smell something and they dig the trap up.

You should be able to find it at the hardware store.
I used it to remove the galvanizing from some nuts with large washers forged onto them. I don't know  how well it worked as the parts are only spotty. I suspect that I put too many in the acid mix and killed the acid.
For the shiny plating, I think I would use it full strength. I will tell you to do this outside and where the fumes will escape to where the y won't do any harm to  anything. Anysteel item close to the fumes is in danger of becoming corroded. The fumes will not help any of the plants either.
You are a smart guy though, you will know where to put it.

About that last comment, you know what I mean. I just realized what it said.

I have used muratic acid to take speed dip off some used traps I bought and it worked good but I also diped the traps in a solution of baking soda and water to neutralize the acid so it stops working.  I would also wear safety glasses when using acid....ya only get one set of eyes.

I just finished dulling some split rings.  Home depots and the like carry the solution in the paint dept, cement and pool depts.  I dilute it way down...about one cup ADDED TO 1 gal of water.  By diluting the acid things go slower and you can dull the surface to a dark grey finish and still have some protction from rust.  If you remove the plating completely they'll rust and pit very fast.  Also, by diluting the acid you will greatly reduce your risk of serious injury or damage.

If you cannot find muratic acid and you in fact have a zinc finish (not chrome) boiling in baking soda will work also to dull things; a few table spoons per gallon (more won't hurt) and boil for 20 - 30 mins.  This will not work well for chrome but muratic will.
